In May of 2009, my wife broke her leg. She was in a wheelchair for 6 months and a walker for about 3 months. She has just transitioned from 2 canes to 1 cane. In the mean time, I was a total care provider.

In spite of this, I have recently completed a new emulsion, details elsewhere, that moves the final "chapter" of the book forward.

I am very sorry to hear about your wife's injuries. I know being a caregiver is extremely demanding, and important. You report that Mrs. M is recovering which is wonderful news; you are both in my prayers.

I have even contemplated having samples of the various raw papers and films bound with the book, but that might be overkill. It might also be too expensive.

As for those 2 emulsions, I will probably have to make them 2 or 3 times each to iron out the kinks. That is nearly 6 pounds of Silver Nitrate! This is why I am debating the issue with myself.

I'm sure there will be numerous donators to help with this research especially as it will help the book. I'm waiting Formulary to put up the system so I can donate my humble bit for PE's silver nitrate.

Getting people to send samples is an even better idea. I might even take your suggestion, but it will take me a while.

(I wasn't trying to hurry you up. You clearly have your priorities right. This is a project for the joy of it, and we follow along with interest.)

Thanks. Sometimes it feels like I am back at work and I'm my boss. I don't like me telling me what to do! :D

OTOH, I do have to kick myself to get started as this is difficult work and getting harder and harder. In addition, no one seems interested in it around here at all. We used to have parties for RIT students here and visitors all the time, but now all I hear is "you are on your own". Analog is not a current interest in these parts. When most of us retire or leave EK, they abandon photography completely or go to digital.

I always thought about building a massive EMP device, but this would kill my precious internet, and I would no longer be able to watch my foreign shows.

Ron, Were you just being specious or half-serious? I have several unopened large (wide) rolls of baryta paper from Formulary and it would not be a huge task for me to round up some students and generate 100 consistent contact prints for you. It's summertime and student labor can be found for just the price of a few pizzas!

I assume you have a certain image/neg you would want copied? I'm sure you have some specific technical parameters you need maintained, etc.

It seems to me that you are working as hard as any one man should, and if any of us can contribute some small pieces to your project, it sounds like you have already earned our support.

I was half joking, but if I could get 100 or so 4x5 contact prints with good coating quality of one single negative with a reference print set at the same density and gradation on a brand name paper of any sort (but identified), this would go into the book with pleasure along with an acknowledgment of your work and the students names along with you and the school. After all, credit where credit is due! Including a Stouffer step wedge in the image area would be a big benefit as well. I do this with a 6x7 negative and a small size Stouffer wedge.

Each of the premium sets would then contain two prints (reference and experiment) along with the DVD set. If you go ahead, please insure that you know what contrast grade you get from the Formulary and check beforehand. I think that they are almost out of the current supply and may only have one grade in stock. IDK when the next run is scheduled.

I saw that Formulary had both a low contrast and a regular batch – is there one that would make the most sense?

Would you supply me with a specific negative, or do I use one of my own (which is not a problem).

I have step tablets from both stouffer and those big yellow guys too.

Just to be clear, the experiment print would be the one using formulary's solution and the reference print would use a commercial paper?

Miller;

One would be a Formazo print and the other would be a standard print, both run through the same developer with one of your negatives and a step wedge. So, there would be 2 prints.

The Formazo comes in Soft and Hard (about 2 and 3 grade with Azo speed).

The choice of negative would depend on which batch they have left. If they only have the Soft, then you would need a harder negative, etc....

Does this make sense to you?

Good morning, Ron Mowery;

While I had intended last year to buy the full set of the DVD and the book on film emulsion making, I did run into a couple of problems, including a medical surprise which has been overcome, but the other surprise associated with the Lycoming O-300B in the C-172 did take a little more than I had expected. It even affected my purchases of camera gear. There really is something worse than the definition of a boat.

However, both of the sources I had for buying the book say that they are out, and they are hoping that there will be another printing at some time in the near future. Are there any prognostications on the time schedule for when that might possibly happen?

Yes, I have run out of books. I am trying to schedule a new printing run and will ship ASAP to the two places that handle the book and DVDs. All I have are a few in perfect binding that are shipped to libraries. They prefer this binding for the labeling. I shop customers ring bound copies for use in the lab as they lie flat.

Just be patient. About 1 - 2 weeks should do it.

The books were ordered and printed. I have new stock, but there was an error in the printing and so I have to wait until the error is cleared up before I can ship any.

Thanks Kirk. I am collecting data for V2 if there is to be a V2.

Anything that PE has to say on the subject of color film would be a valuable contribution to the literature.
