Nothing can replace Ron's book, and I have encouraged him to make the information available again. Until then, The Light Farm website and book are free to read. I am very proud that many people have learned to make paper and film with the information.

The book would not have been much less expensive in digital form. Most of the profit is going towards the cost of nearly 1KG of Silver Nitrate, beakers, hot plates and other ancillary chemistry. It also covers lots of experiments and "How To" on coating. It also helps cover the shooting of the DVD. Rental of a camera at that time costed about $3000 for the time needed for the shoot. A camera of the same quality cost just about the same. So, this did not come cheap for a retired person.

How much do you need to break even? Have you thought of a Go Fund Me page?

For a long time that Formulary page was part of my daily routine of links to check in case some stock magically appeared. It seems it did in the past few days, so I jumped on it; I hope it's not simply a glitch.

They told me that they were out of them and needed more. I hope that they found a hidden cache of them somewhere.

If not, contact Mark Osterman or Nick Brandreth at GEM.

You'd suggested that before, but I felt a bit weird about randomly emailing someone about purchasing a book, lol.

I'm another highly satisfied owner and user of the book. It's truly a steal at $100. It is also much less expensive than other books which may be of interest to the home emulsion maker, such as Gunther Fischer's Stabilizers for Photographic Silver Halide Emulsions and Ingo Leubner's Precision Crystallization, and its scope is much more relevant to us. There's simply nothing comparable in breadth of information. We are incredibly fortunate to have the information contained within available to us at all, regardless of price. If this book hadn't been written, I would have no idea where to start with dipping my toes into controlled precipitations (on a related note, just today I got a peristaltic pump working within a reasonable pump rate using an arduino and cheapo stepper motor driver, which is a significant milestone for an amateur like me.) I don't mean to be presumptuous, but it's certainly a book worth saving for, if the subject is of interest. I truly hope that the book continues to be available, and if there's any way I could help with organizing a reprinting (or print-to-order service, or file hosting on a site), I'd be thrilled to help.

In the interim, there's a video overview of PE's emulsion making process on Anthony Mournian's youtube channel. Although not narrated by PE, it basically amounts to a teaser for the full DVD movies, and it even has some "spoilers". PE has also provided a tonne of info in his forum posts here on APUG, all available to read for free. Furthermore, The Light Farm has all the info needed to get started, available for free! If anyone doesn't know where to start with emulsion making, coating, and testing, there are several people who would be thrilled to discuss it over in the emulsion making forum.

Ingo is an old friend of mine. He did some of the illustrations and appendices for the book.

Truzi, did you get the book from Mark???

No, I ordered it from the Photographers Formulary. I did consider emailing Mark when you suggested it in your June post (#96), but felt uncomfortable mailing a stranger (guess I'm weird... I'd never make it as a Nigerian scammer, lol).

Mark is a great guy. Don't be afraid of him or Nick. They give great workshops as well. Look at their Facebook posts.

I know it's been a few years and of course with the unfortunate news of PE's passing... but does anyone know if his book/DVD is available anywhere, at any price, currently?

You could try contacting mark osterman, but I don't think he will have any either.

I would like to have one DVD too, although I think if I see footage of PE, i'll cry.

I was very sad with his passing. He was so kind and I used to message him in private in this forum, and he always had time and patience to answer me.

I asked Ron if I could sell copies of his DVDs. He said it was Okay. I will be out of town until mid-November. I want to contact his family about this because I want any profits to go to them. Let me know in mid-November and maybe I can sell you copies of DVD 1 & 2 at a dollar or two over my cost/shipping.

If this does become a reality, make sure to add a new post and see if the mods will make it a sticky!

Who the hell has a DVD player these days? And when they do (me), who watches instructional videos on them?
Almost might as well be on Laserdisc.
There has to exist an accessible online pay to play service.
How difficult is it to monetize on YouTube?

Plenty of people still have DVD players, just look around how many films are still available to buy on that format. And quite a lot of PC's can still use them and to play videos. I'll certainly be interested in buying Ron's set if they become available.

I would love to pay for the book and disc. There are print to order services out there. What do I know, but this is something that's preserved and available to scholars.

Ron's family owns the copyright to the DVDs and the book. I would like to be sure that all the revenues go to them if we go online with pay to play or a Kindle format for the book.

That's a great idea. It would open it up to a greater number of students of the alchemy.

Many of the people who replaced their VHS player with them!
We have three computers with them built in, plus two blue ray players that will play DVDs too.
And if we need another, we can buy them from Walmart.
