I heard about this issue, and sure enough, my two boxes (with expiry dates 2027) have no notch codes. Luckily, I could tell by touch, which side was which... That's just dumb, MACO. Dumb!

I cheat and use IR "goggles" the emulsion side shows bright white with the goggles. Still I use the notch to orient the sheet.
That's shocking to hear, hopefully just a limited amount.

When i complained to Maco about my last box of Rollei IR400 having no notch codes, their explanation was "it was not possible to punch the notch during the last production run. However, there should have been a sticker on the packaging indicating this."

Touch with moist lip both sides...if it sticks THATS the emulsion
(well it worked with the old 1/4 plate glass plates I used to use - donkeys years ago) ....worth a try.🤣

I guess I lucked out, my box has notches.
I have a set of NightFox Swift NVG, but I'm reluctant to use them with IR film since the IR emitter glows a very faint red.

I'm not sticking the film in my mouth... With my luck, my lips will show up in prints... or I'll like the taste. 😄
Luckily, the surfaces feel different to the touch. It's pretty pathetic that there was no indication on the box about this issue, especially if they knew about it.

I'd say they probably didn't know about the problem until it was too late and then said, oh well so be it. Now you're stuck with it. Shame on them!

Smack your lips right in the middle. Think of it as a selfie. There's simply no reason why these folks can't have notches. What's special about this film??? Cheap? Vegan?

Whoever can be trusted with small things (notch codes) can also be trusted with big things (ISO speed ratings). Whoever is dishonest in little things will be dishonest in big things too.(the book of Mike) 🥲

Is that the Gospel?😇

I'm not so sure about that John, they followed up with: "For the future, I can tell you that we have found a new production facility for packaging flat films. They are able to punch a notch there.".

Added to the fact that they were supposed to label the boxes indicating no notch codes, means that they knew full well that they had a batch without notches, but still went ahead selling them.

This is actually really sad NGL… you can buy a corner puncher that will solve this problem for $75 online. It’s one extra step before packing. Take the pre-counted stack, stick it in the the punch, punch the corners, stick the stack in the bag. If I can do it in my basement, they have no excuse.

Sheet film has a gelatin layer on both sides. So both sides will feel sticky.

In my experience with Aviphot it’s pretty easy to tell the emulsion side from the base with wet fingers.

I had some 8x10 film with the notch on the wrong side. The film base was clear so not that big a deal.
