i have asked this on 'Flickr' in the 'Vuescan Users Group' but NO REPLY.
I have Vuescan Professional. I have used it with 2 Epson flatbed scanners and since they both went broke I got a Canon 9000F Mk II but suddenly after the scan my 'Software' does not open -- it USED to open my FastStone Image Viewer then changed suddenly to my PhotoShop 7 but now neither opens and image opens in Windows Photo Viewer which I do not want ! It DOES save the images into the folder I have specified though, but it is a bit of a bind to keep having to close that Windows Viewer and find the saved Folder to work on images. I have just 'updated' to the latest version of Vuescan.
can anyone tell me how to get my Image Processing Software to OPEN after the scan as it USED to ?

Hi Pete,

I'm running rather old and outdated versions of everything you're using there, but hopefully my screen shot will still help you find the settings you need to look into and, possibly, change. I've highlighted the tab at the top of the screen you need to go to, and also the place where you can choose your external viewer and which editor Vuescan will use.
I hope this helps and, if my screen looks too differently to yours, I'll look into updated versions and try to find where they differ to help you through any necessary changes.

Vuescan with FastStone as viewer and Photoshop as editor:

In my Version I went to 'Prefs; and there is NO little box to click on for 'External Viewer' and NO 'External Editor' at all , only 3 options -- NONE, FOLDER and VIEWER-- maybe its in 'Auto Load Options' box ? It says 'OFF', 'AUTO' and 'ON' -- not sure what it means ,

You wouldn't happen to be able to take a screenshot or even a photo of your screen? I can't find 'Auto Load Options' anywhere on my edition and now I'm feeling as though I'm not of much help at all
I went through Hamrick's help manual and there's a dearth of screen images to give one an idea of what should and shouldn't be there in each edition. Hopefully someone with the updated version you have will chime in soon and know what you're seeing on your screen that I don't have on mine.

...I just read through the manual at little more carefully and, obviously, I wasn't paying attention the first time around. Is this what you're seeing?

Click on the Advanced Tab near the bottom left. All of your drop-down menus will get much, much longer.

The new option they have on Vuescan saves a lot of extra usage on my Epson V700 scanner. It slowly scans them all in preview and then loads them all into files without doing them individually. Saves a lot of wear on my scanner. Vuescan has a lot of options that are available and if you have problems they are very helpful quickly if you have the Pro version.

My version is : 9.7.01 and there is already a free upgrade today to 9.7.02 !
MATT :
I do not have an 'Advanced Tab' bottom left to click on .I always set the 'Professional 'option anyway. I do not know how to do a 'Screen-Shot' of it -- I will have to wait until my 'Technical Adviser' my Daughter comes home from work to show me !

Do you have an "Options +" tab down there? You need to look for the "Viewer" setting, and then browse through your computer to find the executable file for the Viewer you wish to use. Once that is set once, it should use that program thereafter.

What does it say on the drop-down menu when you click on the "External Viewer" field?
If you click on the "Options +" tab you may get more.
This is what my screen shows after I do:

If I want to change the Viewer, I need to either change the "default" in Windows, or click on the @ in the Viewer field and find the executable program file on my computer.

With the new download (9.7.02) There was several changes with the way film is scanned. Learnt a few lessons today when I scanned 120 film instead of my usual 35mm. Had to crop it manually then clicked save NOT scan. Thought I might have to read the instructions until I saved myself doing trial and error. Only have to do one pass on the preview (120 & 35mm) then save as the new download takes care of the rest. Just be careful before you click preview that everything is going to where you want it as well as your DPI and Bits as well as media settings. It's a great system that way as you don't have to scan each frame again after the preview. I loaded everything with TIF file and then went back to do corrections with my Adobe software. Have not ran into any problems yet with my files but that could change on a refresh or restart.

The middle screen is the "Options+" version.
In the middle of that, you will see:
upload_2019-10-8_8-24-28.png

You need to either:
1) in Windows, change the default image viewing program - which will affect all sorts of things on your computer; or
2) in Vuescan, click on the "@" symbol beside the "default" in the Viewer field. Then you need to search on your computer for the executable file for the program you wish to use.
For the purpose of this illustration, I've switched mine over to FastStone on my copy of Vuescan.
So now, that page looks like this:
upload_2019-10-8_8-30-14.png

In my case, that executable file is named and located as follows: C:\Program Files (X86)\FastStone Image Viewer\FSViewer.exe

I use the "Snipping Tools" accessory included in the set of Accessory programs included with the version of Windows 7 Enterprise I work with.

On your settings I also see that on your input settings you have on the Make grey from: auto. I have the setting to infrared instead as it helps to get rid of a lot of the "noise" on the scanned negatives. My settings are the same that Matt has set except for the external viewer where mine is set for Adobe.

I have used VueScan for about 10 years. The documentation is always multiple version behind, and the program has added or changed features routinely introduced without warning.

Thanks for all your help. I did a search in Program Files x86 and found 'FastStone but it was NOT an 'exe' file just a set -up i think. I will wait until my Technical Assistant ( My Boy) comes home from University on Friday for his Mum's Birthday and show him ---

Good thinking as the newer versions took me a while to properly scan negs. I found how to do the latest for 35mm film and it took me a few tries the way it used to be to get it right as I was always pushing the scan button and it was not working. I found the save button which was not on the previous versions and it loaded all 24. Saved my scanner 23 passes to load all my negatives. Another story on the 120 film though and I have 2 rolls drying right now so tomorrow I will see what a challenge I will have.

Worked well on the 120 film with manual cropping. Crop one at a time then click save. Just the preview settings must be set properly and no more running the Vuescan on each negative.
Doesn't it normally adjust the scan settings for each individual image for best exposure time? There is no loss of shadows of highlights when scanning everything at once?

It does on the start preview settings adjusts them all automatically but the cropping needs adjusting manually on the 120 film. With 35mm everything is auto adjusted for them all and a setting for autofocus the preview scans. Experimenting more with the 120 film when I have more.
