...which is why using the short dimension of the frame, and its multiples WILL result in SAME ANGLE of VIEW along the short dimension of the frame, regardless of format aspect ratio!

I think most people would compare the angle field of view of the width, horizontal side when shooting a landscape view - the longer side wide. So to compare two formats, a 150mm in 4x5 format matches a 43mm lens in 35mm equipment.

35mm equipment stats for 43mm lens: (3:2 format)
45.4H x 31.2V x 53.D all in degrees h=horizontal, v=vertical d=diagonal

4x5 LF 150mm lens" (5:4 format)
45.9H x 37.4V x 56.9 D

A 50mm lens in 35mm eqyipment matches a 176mm in 4x5 horizontally in field of view.

Is there a performance difference between the two designs?

I've not tested both side by side, but the CM-W series was Fuji's latest and premium lens series, so I'm assuming there is a performance difference. Fuji has typically made lenses that do not have the traditional optical formulas and they perform very well. The shots I have made with Fuji lenses do have more contrast than those I made with a Schneider.

If I was starting from scratch now and building a 4x5 outfit, I'd buy all Fuji lenses.

There is a clear philosophical difference between those who base their lens comparisons on the long edge of the frame vs. those who base their lens comparisons on the short edge of the frame!
😉
And those differences may have something to do with how the photographer presents their work - it is probably important to know that Alan likes to show his work on a 16:9 TV screen - almost certainly in landscape orientation!

I do not disagree about what 'most people would do'...that is why I pointed out that using the millimeter dimension of ths short side of the frame, as the denominator in a fraction (with FL as the numerator) would allow DIRECT COMPARISON of same angle of view captured, regardless of format!

There are LF books discussing the concept of short dimension of the frame in order for photographers to get similar angle of view in different formats...if you shoot a portrait in 135 and in LF, the frame is short horizontal (and the rest of the overly long frame of 135 is cropped off when enlarging the shot to 10x8" or 20x16" or 40x32" print aspect ratio, is it not?!) We shoot the portrait shot based on the width of the subject's shoulders and how they fit into the short direction of the frame. We should not ignore the short dimension considerations in picking 'comparable FL' in different formats...our shooting distances in a studio are constrained differently if we shoot in LF vs. in 135 vs. MF, after all. And we have to consider the short direction of shooting a small group in landscape orientation...we do not want to cut off heads or feet simply because the frame captures a too-wide area for the group!

Matt's point is valid...but display a head and shoulders (or full length standing portrait) on 16:9 aspect ratio monitor is still a portrait orientation shot seen only in the middle portions of that monitor, and many pros use rotatable monitors for the purposes of editing those portrait shots at larger size (filling the screen area more effectively)

The consideration of 'same angle of view' is very much dependent upon both the subject and how the image will be presented. But we should not always think 'diagonal' or 'horizontal' (long direction)...we should also think of short dimension!

I finally pulled the trigger on a Rodenstock Sironar N 135 MC lens from Japan. It certainly looks like a very clean, well cared for lens.....supposed to be here by around 12-27 but will be surprised if it's here by then.

Just want to thank all for your well thought out advice in helping make my decision.

A Kodak 203mm because I got a great deal on it and the lens board it's on (a Graphic "A") fits both my 4x5 Graphic View 2 and my 5x7 Speed Graphic.

I got lenses and other stuff from Japan here in NJ all the time in less than ten days. They're estimating 17 days. Of course, with the holidays, there could be some delay.

I just bought a lens this week from Japan and they shipped Fedex. It was almost exactly 48 hours from hitting the "buy it now" on ebay to the Fedex truck pulling up in front of my house in Canada.

Awaiting the arrival of my Sironar N 135 lens from Japan. It arrived at the DHL facility in Louisville, KY on the 12th, was transferred to a third party agent (doesn't say who) also on the 12th.........today, the tracking update says......"shipment on hold, there was an issue with delivery".

I've never seen an update like that before, wondering if it's a customs issue since it's from Japan.

"shipment on hold, there was an issue with delivery".

This sounds very much like what my partner keeps seeing on FedEx deliveries for the past couple years. They simply won't deliver down the private road we live on, unless the right person is gotten on the phone and/or complaints lodged outside FedEx are noticed. Notably, UPS and Amazon have no trouble here (despite our crazy neighbor sometimes confronting the drivers), it's only FedEx... They used to deliver stuff to the wrong address (which is bad, when it's live sea creatures).

Interesting.......maybe I should've mentioned that it is still on hold, apparently, at the main hub in Louisville, or at least with the third party agent it was given to in Louisville, definitely not in my home town yet. Also, I live on a major state road in Ky, just a 100 miles from there.

Okay, that might well be customs related, then. If you start now, you may be able to grow a nice beard by the time you get it...

I admit I'm ignorant of how they clear items in customs......what do they do, open it to see what it is, confirm the sender is legit, etc....?

Normally just check the paperwork.... it's unusual to open the package. late november through december the volume of packages in transit skyrockets and processing carries on at the normal daily rate.

Ok. I figured when purchasing that December shipping was not the quickest, then the email from DHL, indicated delivery by COB yesterday.....and when it arrived in Louisville on the 12th, I thought it just might happen.......so I will be patient.

On a trip to the Caribbean, my wife and I bought something a little heavy but had the store ship it home so we wouldn't have to carry it on the plane. A couple of weeks later, when we were home in NYC, we got notified by customs that we had to go down to JFK airport, find their hidden location, and pay customs their import duty charge so they could give us the package. There had to be an easier way.

There is (open borders), but it takes away control from some government or agency, removes "necessary" restrictions on international trade, and so forth.
