Hello, I have a Praktica MTL5B and I want to clean the viewfinder, but I have no way to remove the shutter speed selector. It was taped and I didn't know how to remove it so as not to affect the camera. I need help.

Thanks very much.

Try a heat-gun (hot air), whilst covering the rest of the camera. That might soften the adhesive of the cover of the button.

Servicing Manual for the Praktica L serie

I uploaded the PDF of the servicing manual provided by kmw.
Here's the link, it is in German but with patience it's translatable.

Note: The pages below are missing, if someone has them, please share them with us.

Welcome!

The only pages missing are those with exploded views.
As member Helios I asked in this forum for those views, without any reply.

I guess they had been taken out of the manual, to be displayed at the workplace, and thus are missing at the scanned sample. of the service manual.

Try to hold down the shutter release, and advance the rewind lever at the same time.

Hi
I have a Praktica L2 version, it broke the first two films I used while rewinding
Looked a few turorials on how to load and unload the film and it’s ok, also the entire film gets out of the chasis, the issue is always when I try to rewind it
First film- pulled too hard and went completely out of the chasis
Second film- pulled really really gently and slow but at some point the film broke and wasn’t abel to continue rewinding, I had to open it and take the film out “by hand”. I noticed it wasn’t that tight, it came out easyly so I have no idea why it won’t rewind when using the lever

I did push the “release” button on the bottom as well, is not that I’m forgetting that first step

also noted that the rewind lever never runs smoothly, don’t understand why. I checked it without film and worked fine

Any clue? Thanks!

After pressing the release button, turn the take-up reel and the take-up sprocket counterclockwise to see if they turn smoothly. If they do, the only other issues could be is something sharp in the film path, defective film, or turning the rewind knob in the wrong direction.

Hi!
Thanks for your reply
when I rewinded the film the take up lever worked, but I’m not sure if there was more tension that’s suppossed to.

I mean, I did it very carefully but it wasn’t moving suuuuper smoothly, not stucked either

Someone suggested me that maybe the release button is not working properly and I should try to rewind the film while holding it as well….

I’ll have to find a used film/chasis and try again
☹️

Hello All, I just picked a Praktica L2 that is missing the shutter speed number plate. Does anyone have any extra parts or know of a source for parts? Thanks for your help!

Welcome to Apug !

The L-series was built in numbers that likely someone here has a sample just for parts. But what about printing one yourself, varnishing it and sticking it on?

Hi All,

PRAKTICA MTL5b JAMMED WIND LEVER

See video below I posted which shows the wind lever jamming on the small rotating stop arm. It appears that the wind lever stop arm is not being reset by the adjacent cam when advancing the film.

It will only reset if I hold down the shutter release button whilst advancing the wind lever, as shown in the video.

Have no idea how to fix it. I am trying to decipher the service manual posted at #4.

Thanks for taking a look.

Does the mirror return or does it stay up? Do the shutter curtains cycle properly? Try to pull the shutter curtain down with your fingernail.

If I hold down the shutter button and cycle the advance lever, the mirror flicks up and down and the curtain cycles properly intermittently (as in I can see light from viewing at the rear of the camera). the majority of the time the curtains do not open and I cannot see light passing through the camera. The curtains on the MTL5b fold upwards and are lapped over each other so I cannot manually push them up with my anil without causing damage.

To test, one tries to pull the curtains down not up.. There is a flat headed silver screw by the advance mechanism. You could try loosening it and pull the metal strap from the shutter mechanism as far to the right ( looking from the back) as possible Then tighten the screw. See if then the shutter works correctly.

Thanks for the reply. I have not come across advice similar to this, so I'll definitely try it out and let you know the result 😊

I am not near my camera at the moment, I'll have to look at it tomorrow. But out of interest, do you feel it may be something to do with the shutter curtain not operating correctly? I am still trying to figure out how the advancing mech works and how the cam that moves the "cocking lever catch" is controlled? I found a loose screw behind the bottom plate. Someone find a similar loose screw from a similar Reddit thread I started, and identified the home of the screw to be within the mirror housing.

Hi Chuck just wanted to update and say your tip worked perfectly. the shutter mechanism now works great!! Thank you so much for taking the time to respond.

All thats left now is the faulty film wheel release button at the bottom of the camera, when pressed in it gets stuck on a loaded catch and I have to remove the bottom plate to fully rewind the film at the end of a roll. This isnt a major issue though.

Thanks again.
