Received a very interesting card from @Jord186 - apparently a photo of the side of a container. However, it is so decontextualized that it really comes across as abstract. I like that it is not obvious what it is - that it is so far from obvious, it's confusing when you get told what it actually is. Very cool.

My cards will be in the mail by the end of the month - life can throw some curves!

I usually like the "artifacts" the post office adds to the cards, but found that all but 2 of the cards from round 56 were sent in an envelope. So I'll be joining the majority for round 57 - seems there's a sentiment that they'll better survive the world's postal systems.

I haven't sent mine in an envelope. But I always worry that a card will get eaten by postal machinery or just get mixed in with junk mail and tossed inadvertently. I've been careful to check all the junk mail I get since joining the postcard exchange and, sure enough, a couple of times an actual postcard has ended up interleaved in a flyer.

But, still, it's supposed to be "postcards" so I send postcards.

@Don Heisz have you sent RC or fiber postcards?

I send RC. I'm not saying other people should send them not-in-envelopes. I'm only saying that's been what I chose to do. I may choose differently in the future, when all my "Postcard" paper runs out - or if I choose to send a colour one.

This is my first time too! I put 23 cards in the mail today. I'm using my Ilford post card paper. I wish I had bought more!

I used labels, my penmanship is awful, labels should help insure delivery.

Best Regards, Mike

The Post Office apparently has a very well developed AI for that. My handwriting is illegible (but apparently very pretty) and the post office manages to read it whenever I send out postcards and letters. You should be fine if you do want to handwrite, or have to for things like security envelopes.

I've got an old letterpress. Might need to fire it up.

I was thinking of making a rubber stamp to apply the postcard markings on the back of regular paper.
This time i'll be using envelopes and see how the prints reach you.

Posting in a few days, just need to do a stamp run when i get a break off work.

I finally has some time to get into the darkroom to print my cards. They were delivered to the post office on Tuesday (29 Nov 2022). I sent to bedrof (via Uzbekistan) cards for Rounds 55, 56, and 57. Bedrof, I hope you get them. Following are my comments in no particular order.

"Production landscape" from koraks is an interesting study in textures.
"Great Langdale Valley" from mikeg depicts a peaceful valley in the UK. I like the balance between dark foreground and light sky.
"Change?" from Jim Christie gives the viewer a lot to consider, and asks several questions about our "modes of transportation".
"Fat Baxter's" from mfohl has a great story that goes with the image.
"Postcard" from negativefunk reminds me of some of the California coast. I like how the dark rocks draw the viewer into the image.
The photo of Notre-Dame in scaffolding by Daniela is a somber reminder of what happened to this wonderful cathedral. May it be restored to the best of our ability.
"Backlit Grape Leaf" by Don Heisz one of those images that "works" in any orientation.
"OPEN" by mshchem has a wonderful message, and offers tasty treats. This is a shop I would be tempted to visit too often. Nice composition and tonal qualities.

Thank you to all for sharing your work.

Regards,
Darwin

I also received drpsilver's Burst of Grass. Nice grass against the horizon and sky. Very nice study of what I would call "reeds". I'm not a nature guy. Also, only two scuff marks from the postal service ...

I received two nice cards (letters!) today. First is jvo's Stairway to Heaven, a stairway in an aquarium leading to a massive expanse of sky. A nice cloudy dramatic sky too, framed by the structure of the aquarium. And second is jord186's Container, a nice structural study of some sort of industrial container. Three successive squares on the container, the third of which has massive peeling paint. My kinda shot, very nice. Thanks James and Jordan!

I got two beautiful ones today:

"London St Pancras" from @peter_ . A gorgeous color print of said train station, with beautiful leading lines, soft tones and many layers of interesting details/textures. Thank you, Peter!

"Burst of grass" from @drpsilver A beauty in black and white, with elegant grass stalks in an open landscape, and with grays for days! Joy, indeed! There's a part of the image ripped from the very center, right over the stalks and I'm tempted to intervene it à la kintsugi to restore some of the grace that has been lost. If I do, I'll send you a picture! Thank you, Darwin!

I got two beautiful ones today:

Me too, the same ones!

@peter_ was this Kodak Endura fresh? Is it the cut-sheet material you can get from Nordfoto Versand, perhaps? It looks good! The base is a lot thinner than what I bought from them a few years ago (that might have been Supra Endura?), but yours isn't fogged like mine was!

There's a part of the image ripped from the very center

For me it's on the bottom, also in the center. It looks like transport roller damage where (rubber?) transport belts or drums ripped off a part of the emulsion layer. I saw the exact same defect on a different postcard.
Doesn't matter; I still like that print a lot!

Yep, I'd say it's the same kind of damage in the postcard I received. I don't usually have a problem with markings, but since this one is right in the center, I'm tempted to work on it 👩‍🎨

I also recieved Darwin's (@drpsilver) Burst of Grass - but intact (although I can see a a sheen on the emulsion where some rubber wheel tried to eat it). There's not much more pleasant than those tall, waving seeds of grass. There's something optimistic about them.

Received a very cool colour card of St. Pancras station from @peter_ -- looks like a place where you could take a lot of photos but this one is nicely composed -- your eye is drawn to the clock and the view has a lot of depth. It's also printed really well. I'm always pleased when I get great contrast like that in a colour enlargement.

Also recieved Stairway to Heaven from @jvo -- this one is a bigger card. The sky is excellent - it almost looks unreal in contrast with the dark framework that surrounds it. And the people on the staircase seem oblivious to it. There's something very imposing about the structure that surrounds them...

i think the postal systems the world over used the same machine, or similar design - the rubber wheel scratches off the ink or emulsion in the center of each card as it speeds it on the way! I actually like this artifact on the cards as it reflected the wear-and-tear, bends, crimps and corner dents of the postcards of yesteryear traveling through the systems. I know I'm in the minority, but i've also preferred the handheld print to one on the wall!

Either way, the Postcard exchange is a wonderful endeavor!

I was going through a stack of books I'm in the process of reading - lo' and behold, i found 5 cards!

from...

koraks, "production landscape" - I, too believe you should be able to make images and art, wherever your planted! in this case a very thoughtful piece of your homeland.
bedrof, old pottery (pitharis) - and a history lesson of Cyprus - and very nicely printed!
jord186, Container, espoo, finland - being a fan of abstract work i wish i could as well - the lines and forms juxtaposed with the peeling paint, nice tones and texture
drpsilver, burst of grass - well composed, perfect depth of field, and details - a warm feeling, i want to lie in grass and enjoy the warmth
mikeg, great langdale valley - my kind of picture, love the dark tones with details, wonderful shapes and clouds. (i see the use of bar codes to mar the image and beauty of the stamp! before long i guess it will be a worldwide phenomenon - downhill!)

thank you the great photography and back stories. now back to catching up on my reading!

Oh, I also like the markings, for the most part. I actually dislike that so much emphasis is put on pristine, acid-free, archival, blah blah blah. Time and experience = charm!

Either way, the Postcard exchange is a wonderful endeavor!

My apologies - I managed to get some time off from work and have been travelling for the last two months, so I haven't sent out any cards yet. I'll develop some films and will send out something soon!

But it's been great to come home and have ten nice cards in the mailbox. Incidentally, I go back and forth on whether to send the photos as postcards or in envelopes. I do like some light wear and tear, but sometimes, I find it a bit too much. Like the ripped off emulsion in the center of a glossy photograph, or some post office ink on the print.
For example, I received @mshchem very nice and very detailed "Open" postcard of an inviting ice cream shop, but on the print, I am informed that it is Energy Action Month in smudged ink. On the other hand, sometimes the postcards arrive in excellent shape and the stamp and some wear give it something extra - like @negativefunk "Postcard" (I love the contrast between the white waves and the black rocks (or is that seaweed?)).
What to do what to do..
Another card that arrived in great shape is "Change?" from @Jim Christie. Segways in 2009. An interesting observation - Segways have been largely replaced by e-bikes and scooters. Nice composition!
@Don Heisz sent "Leaves Like Feathers" which makes me think of an inverted photogram. And of feathers!
"Oregon Park" by @jonmon6691 is showing a powerful-looking tree trunk. Love the texture of the bark against the out-of-focus background.
@mfohl - "Old Church". The cross against the white wall and the roof patterns are indeed great elements but what I especially like about this photograph are the concrete blocks in front of the church. Great photo!
@Jord186 - "Container, Espoo, Finland" - Almost abstract, shapes and textures, contrasts. Helped by the use of medium format and toning. Super cool. Would love to see this bigger.
@mikeg - "Great Langdale Valley" - Stunning landscape. Absolutely love the clouds especially. Fantastic.
@koraks - "Production Landscape" - Oh wow. Thank you for your thoughtful and personal write-up. The print is very interesting too - at first, I thought it was a toned monochrome until inspecting it closer. This is quite special.
@peter_ - "London St Pancras" - Very much a colour photograph. What a beautiful station, very well captured.
