Plaubel Makiflex Standard.

Here are some goodies that arrived here today. My 180mm F2.8 Sonnar from KEH in Atlanta ($94) and three 2 1/4" x 3 1/4" Linhof cut film holders (with the spring loaded pressure plate!) from the UK. Christmas presents to myself.

This will be a lot of fun to fabricate. I removed the rear mounting as far back as possible, I can see looking through the Makiflex Standard body, that the image is super bright (F2.8!) but even with recessed board, it is a lens that roughly covers 12"x12" on the 82x90mm Makiflex full frame. Will be a dynamite portrait lens for handhold shooting! Somewhere in the studio, I have an 86mm Zeiss Softar that I bought from B&H, when I was shooting weddings. It cost nearly $500 and will fit the 180mm Sonnar.

I will have to do some careful metal cutting of the recessed board, and careful fitting of the lens. I do NOT think it will be too heavy on the Makiflex, but we will see.

Any deeper mounting than this, and the rear cell will strike the mirror as you fire the shutter. So I am still deciding how I want to mount this one up.

Here is my latest-- Makiflex's cousin- the Pecoflex.

It needs to be cleaned up a bit and a few things require fixing but overall a nice example. Plus only ~400 shutter actuations.

Looks like it has been stored for a long time, a true garage find. They made a wide angle bellows, specifically for the Pecoflex. They also made a beautiful compendium for it, you have the compendium holder on your camera front, so you have part of it. It is removable. Symmar barrel lenses are wonderful performers, but you may prefer the Apo-Skopars? Fabulous camera with longer lenses, especially since you can do front moves.

I think the Pecoflex was their top of the line model. 400 actuations is practically like new!

The CZJ Zeiss 180mm F2.8 Sonnar mounted on the Plaubel Makiflex Standard.
It covers about 15"x15" or 16"x16" with the helical focusing at infinity, bellows racked full in.
Perfect for a tight head shot. Appears to cover 9x9cm beautifully.

Do you mean inches, as in 15" x 16"? If so y'r camera is much larger than I thought or I completely misunderstand what you're saying.

It focuses out to cover an area of 15"x15" or 16"x16" OK? Like a tight head shot. So on this camera, it's a close-up lens only, which is fine for my intended uses. As a tight portrait (beauty) lens I think it is unsurpassed. It covers 9X9cm very admirably, as far as I can tell (stay tuned). I have some ideas coming to mind I really want to try soon. This is a very special lens in my opinion.

Somewhere around my studio I have a Zeiss 86mm Softar II, that I used to use with this lens for wedding beauty head shots. It cost he almost $500 from B&H at the time (and had to be special ordered).

So I went out today with the Makiflex Standard, and the new 180mm F2.8 CZJ Sonnar, my Wife and I went to the local botanical garden. She shoots Canon D50, and I shoot Makiflex. Only had a little over an hour, but finished up 1/2 roll of Fuji Acros in a 6x9cm Makina back, and another 1/2 roll of Fuji Neopan 400, in another 6x9cm Makina back. Also I loaded up and shot a full roll of Foma Classic 200 in a Graphic 23 wind-knob back I have been wanting to try. I love this lens, the bokeh is unbelieveable, and the DOF is thin as a razor blade at F2.8. Some enjoyable unique compositions popped up, so I am pleased. So this gives me almost enough rolls to a make a processing run. I will try to go out within the next week and shoot another few rolls, I have some new ideas about what I want to do with all this wonderful equipment.

Final mounting of the 180mm F2.8 MC Sonnar on the Plaubel Peco Jr. recessed lensboard. I bought a new scroll saw for my camera workshop (XMAS present) which works a treat, and then some hand filing and fitting did the job, Then on to final mounting and painting. The final paint is now drying.

Notice how I had to cut a slot to acomodate the "fork" that rotates around as you open and close the lens. I elected to keep the fork, it moves in and out also, as you focus the helical. Also notice how I reutililized the three original rear mounting screws from the interior part of the rear of the lens. Removing the "fork" would most likely NOT have be a good idea. So the lens works as intended and has not been hacked except by my "McGuyver" mounting process

Here are my smallish film holders, from Germany and the UK. Four of the Linhof 6.5x9cm, and four of the Linhof 2 1/4x3 1/4". Enough to go out for a shoot. The 2x3 film I buy fresh from Freestyle. 6.5x9cm I have been buying from Europe on the internet. www.lumiere-shop.de has been a good resource for me for 9x12cm Wephoto (I think this is Orwo?). Today on Ebay I bought three old boxes of Orwo NP20 6.5x9cm (from Bulgaria). Outdated but said to be usuable. B&H in New York used to have Efke 25 & 100 in 6.5x9cm. I bought twenty boxes of each, when they were closing it out. I do buy Ilford from AG in the UK. They tell me they are right up the road from the Ilford plant.

Are there other internet dealers with 6.5x9cm film for sale? Where are they?

OK Understood. Sneebot just got one see above ^^ Wish I had seen it; it was only on the Ebay auction for a couple of days, and went for a super-low price. I'd have bought it in a heartbeat. Oh Well..............

Yes the Pecoflex was the top-of-the-line model and cost significantly more than the Makiflex or Makiflex Standard. Really only works on a tripod, I would imagine. The Makiflex and Makiflex Standards are easily hand-holdable.

Matt is a great Guy and I'm sure he will love it!

Hey All,

This is what arrived today, in two different shipments from two dealers in Bulgaria. Outdated Orwo NP20 & NP15 6.5cmx9cm cut film. This film size is very hard to find in the USA. 125 sheets of the NP20 & 25 sheets of the NP15.

The dealer with the NP20 suggested Ilford Microphen, and an extra stop or two. What do you Guys think? What works well with these films?

The dealer said the NP20 looked rather good in Microphen. The NP15 is only 25 ASA so it should be fine....
