I got the same problem. No alerts of any kind.

Not sure if this is from the original APUG, but when I did a search on Google, a link to APUG regarding the Darkroom Portraits thread popped up on the LFP forum. I get a 404 message when attempting to access via the supplied link:

Sean, is it possible to delete your own posts and threads? I don't seem to have a delete button next to edit.

We have gone over this for years. There is a time limit for deleting or editing. After a short amount of time a post starts affecting the thread, after that deleting or editing a thread causes problems.

I had a look and need outside help which was not available until now so we're investing (alerts). Thanks for your patience.

First, I must say this has gone very smooth from this user's perspective. I'm seeing new "faces"; don't know if this is due to the integration with dpug but I think it's good.

And yes, you're a bad guy for expecting those who, by their continued activity, clearly value this forum but refuse to help support it (I'll exclude those who can't afford it). But obviously you're not "bad" enough, since they continue. So I'll reiterate my suggestions:

(Rant on)
  • Put a cap on posting for non-members. 10, 100, 500; I don't know. But something that allows the new or casual user to continue, but restricts those who abuse the privilege.
  • Initiate a "scholarship" program. Anyone who says "I just can't afford it" gets a free subscription for the following year. On the honor system. If you think it's getting abused, yank it.
  • Don't allow members to view the "free stuff" forum. I'm a bit ambivalent on this as those new to analog are the folks who can most benefit. But why (in most cases) take advantage of a subscriber's generosity when you won't support this forum.
(Rant off)

With "non-members" you mean "non-subscribers"

Paywalls never ever work. Ever.

Just getting people to sign up for an account is hard enough. Forcing people to pay to interact would kill the site.

Thanks. Don't sweat it too much.

Hi Sean,
It's outside business hours in New Zealand so please disregard this until you're back on the clock tomorrow
Anyway, I noticed yesterday that the New Post Count was very skewed. I don't have any forums, threads or people on my Ignore list and all three processes are ticked as visible so I'm not sure where the high number is coming from as opposed to the actual number of posts being shown. Please see attached screen shots.
On a slight tangent, with regard to Alerts, I recently updated my Gmail app on my phone and no longer receive push notifications for mail. So, if a monster company like Google is struggling to get this stuff running smoothly, I think you should definitely not be fretting about temporary glitches in the system here - you have done amazing things!

Molli, one is the number of actual new posts and the other is the number of threads that have these new posts.

I'm an idiot! Thank you so much, that makes total sense and also explains why I'm only noticing it now - with the lack of alerts, I've been marking all read and so there are now a lot more unread posts per thread than I was seeing before doing that. Thank you again, Anon Ymous.

Sean, now you really can disregard my post!

I enabled just "analog". Now for the first time within the "New Posts" listing a thread from "Digital Cameras and Capture" showed up. (When clicking it I though got the appropriate warning that the thread would not be intended for me.)

Was it a thread you replied in or happened to be watching?

No. I am not interested in digital things. I only clicked on it after it being presented to me to see what happens.

might have just needed an additional refresh after deselecting the other options. Do you see it after a refresh? Thanks

Sorry, but I'm not buying the "I can't afford it" excuse. Photographers who can buy cameras, lenses, film, darkroom equipment, paper, chemicals, and all the rest, not to mention a computer and an internet connection, can afford the equivalent of a cup of coffee a month. You may choose not to subscribe, and spend the $2 elsewhere, but that is an entirely different matter.

Thank you. As it should not show up again anyway, as it was in "new posts", I don't know. I shall do a refresh if see such again.

Hi All, alerts and emails within the forums are working again. Sorry for the delays in that fix. If you still have any issues let me know. Thanks

Ok, things are going to start ramping up again with dev & marketing. I've been away a bit on some other unrelated jobs. Sorry for the delays.

Thanks,
Sean
