I’d expect new Pentax film cameras to be pretty rudimentary compared to the sorts of offerings which were routine in the 1980s, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t have fun with them.

DId someone hit Sirius upside the head with a selfie stick?

There are plenty of reasons to take selfies. None requires an armchair diagnosis of narcissism....which is a serious personality disorder with no effective treatment.

The P&S cameras of the 90s are still attracting a lot of interest and top dollar. That's why Pentax/Ricoh's research leads them there for their first new film camera.

Yes, it's wise to start simple and add bells and whistles as demand grows. I wonder what MSRP they're shooting for? Knowing that would tell a lot about what features they're planning to include.

Lol. He couldn't even manage color.
Ansel Adams was quite obviously a huge narcissist. It turns out that most famous photographers were narcissists at some time or another. Who knew!

Perhaps you are using the term narcissist in the colloquial rather than clinical sense.

We actually have board members calling this man a narcissist who's engaging in a lower form of photography. Guess who'd I'd rather hang out with?

I can see strawman building is still a big hobby here.
You know perfectly well what I mean. Yet you chose to score cheap, callout and “Us against the evil gatekeeper” points instead.

Of course I’m not talking about artful, clever, funny or personal self portraiture.

Anyone can look on Instagram and various other sites for examples of vacuous selfies that are the antithesis to the above.
We all know them.

We were talking about the possibility of making sure people could take those kind of selfies by putting a mirror on and making it compatible with trigger selfie sticks.
That would be a big mistake for a lot of reasons.

People are responding by saying that the ability to make "vacuous" selfies is probably good for those who want to do silly things with cameras, good for those who want to play and good for those who want to experiment, and as such good for sales, which in itself would be good for those of us who want to use cameras for other, usually non-vacuous purposes.

Were you never young and foolish ?

You can also plaster it in Hello Kitty insignias or supply it with various kooky filters to attract again other target groups.
But at the very same time you’ll repel a multitude of other target groups.
Branding it as a selfie camera will make sure most people interested in film will get repelled.
Look at film shots on for example IG.
Very few selfies, even if it’s perfectly possible.

Use your damn phone if you want to brag about being near the Eiffel Tower or having bought a new dress.

And, I am young and foolish.

You must certainly be young and foolish because no one older and wiser is acting the way you are. How can you handle really important issues if you come unglued over trifles like this?

I don't like what the kids like so the kids should not do it but only do what I like.

Yeh, that's about right. Except extend "kids" to "anyone". Can you imagine at 60-70+ years of age doing an emotional crash-and-burn and spitting vitriol over someone wanting to take a picture of themselves and the missus on vacation?

Current best selling camera, film or otherwise is the Fuji Instax line.

I don't think 99% of Instax users are doing it for the art. They're having fun while some Oscars online argue about selfies.

It's gotta be hard going through life without humor. You know? I looked into that Adams fellow, turns out aside from the selfies he did some other work. I think everyone should check him out, he might have been onto something.

Do you know that if you have a Hasselblad C series camera with an 80mm lens, it is impossible to take an arms length selfie unless you either:
1) have the world's longest arms; or
2) you add a close focus only accessory.
The horror

Minimum focus distance on an 80mm CF is a little over two feet, so if you're over 6 feet tall I'd say it's in the realm of possibility?

I'm surprised Pentax is not doing a "me, too" and coming out with their own version of the Instax. Usually, that's the way companies do things. Let the other company do the heavy lifting and then come to the market with a better product at a better price. Of course, the film - like most consumables - is where the money is and that could be the hang-up since it'd be tough for Pentax to compete with Fuji on the film front.

Hopefully, the camera Pentax has in mind will come in lots of bright fun colors and camo. It would also be cool if they offered different wraps or hard-shells for it based on popular things like video game characters, famous singers, movie stars, sodas, sports teams, etc. Maybe something glitter-based or glow in the dark so you can find your camera under piles of clothes and stuffed toys for those late-night snack-eating selfies.

You know what else would be cool? A multicolored filter wheel/lens protector built into the camera that you can rotate over the lens to give you different effects like a soft look, vignetting, extra flaring, and whatever will make a starburst on someone's tooth when they smile.

Plus, I'd like a selection of standard and programmable sounds for the shutter so, for example, when it was pressed you could hear a short clip of the soundtrack to Frozen, Encanto, or Moana instead of just a click.

I'm kind of giddy over the possibilities.

My arms are not long enough to use the 80mm CF to take a selfie, I could use 50mm, but I frankly have better taste than to take a selfie. I could however set the camera down or use a tripod and use the self timer just as real photographers have been doing for many decades.

I don't know about better taste, but better judgement for sure. No one needs to see that mug.)

I think that the Pentax KX was the best of all mechanical Pentax cameras and maybe one of the best and most reliable 35mm cameras. With the same quality such a camera would easily cost 3.000€ today.
Sadly I have no idea about the price of KX back then, but according to Sears catalogue of 1981-82, K1000 cost 169$ with 50 mm f/2 lens, which translates into current 556$.

Nikon FM which was of same generation and with similar features as KX went for 289$ (951$). Another example, Olympus OM-1n went for 279$ (918$ now).

[Gosh, K1000 really was that cheeeeeeeeap]

Should Pentax release a new camera, it would mean setting up an entire machinery and hire qualified staff. No doubt this will add to the cost.
