I recently got a Nikon lens that had a F55 camera attached to it - lens will be kept but the camera body will be moving on. But before sending it out to the market again I would like to try to fix the AF issue on a otherwise fully working and nice looking camera.

The camera hunts in AF and can never lock focus. Also happens with different lenses. In MF the camera never recognizes that it is in focus, even if visually I can estimate that it is.

I've tried cleaning the contacts, no luck. Is there any suggestion towards making this an easy fix? Or is it a part that has quit life and will not be easily replaced?

I have repaired a few F55 (N55) but have never repaired that issue. I don't think the AF issue is solved without a new AF module. Just last week I was re-flowing the solder joints to the AF module on an N55 without success.

Of course the service campaign from Nikon is long gone...

I don't know about that camera , but I've had cameras where dust and fluff have been on the AF sensor in the bottom of the mirror box .
Second hand cameras might have been stored without body caps or lenses on .
Butting the camera in bulb mode to lift the mirror out of the way and using a blower bulb in the mirror box to clear and dust and fluff etc out might solve the problem, if that's the problem.

Same technique as clearing dust out of a DSLR .

Thanks for the input. I've tried @neilt3 's suggestion, still no luck. I guess it's going away as a parts camera...

That is why I have 4 N75's. One I use and three in waiting.
