I think the Ilford & Patterson developing starter kit is a great idea.
An all in one box, containing all you need to start your own film developing.

Any new film/paper announcement is great (IMO) and I am delighted for Ilford.

Personally new Ortho film does not excite me, but who cares, there are plenty of people that will love it and that's what counts.

I think the new Ilford & Paterson developing kit is a great idea, especially with the ilford Simplicity Chemicals.
Everything you need to develop your first film in one box. If that can't get someone interested and started with film developing, then I don't know what would.

BTW the teaser was a great marketing ploy (it filled 13 pages in this thread alone)

Imagine you are a teacher in a darkroom full of 9th graders trying to experience film for the first time. No changing bag

Teachers in that position tend to demonstrate the process by making paper negatives, which is far less costly and ridiculously easy to work with.

And my Harley has seen its own shadow, so back into the garage she goes.

I'm sure the new MG RC is a nice upgrade, but I don't use RC paper, so this is of zero interest to me (no RC paper can come close to the tonality of a fiber paper, IMO). And the repackaging of Ortho Plus as roll film is hardly a revelation either. Its not new, its just an added format. Don't get me wrong, I've used Ortho Plus in 4x5 and liked it a lot, but for an Ortho film its expensive (same price as HP5+) and has little to offer than cannot be had by making paper negatives instead. Meh.

I hear you. I would have liked to see it in sheet film... but then again, I have heaps of xray film to turn to when I want the ortho look. For some it's good news. For me....I don't think so. But, as a film lover, I'm pleased to see this happen.

Is there any sample of the same photo shot with ortho and pan film?

The Ortho Plus has been available as 4x5 and 8x10 sheets for ages, Andrew. I can't compare it to Xray film though, as I have never used that type of film. Sure, its always good news to see a company like Ilford actually expanding its product range, but from where I sit, none of this is especially profoundly "new".

people who experiment with reversal processes could better fine-tune their process by actually watching the film as it goes through the processes.

Not only that, people can now, if they want, develop different frames/strips in the same roll to different contrast by inspection.

I found 4x5 Ilford Ortho Plus (with blue label) on the net. It has the same ISO as the newly released stuff but I don't think it's the same film... For example, on the tech sheets, the reciprocity compensation is quite different.

Whoops! Saw this after I posted about it. Thanks Paul!

I am pleased by the announcement. I would have preferred a true IR film, but thought that was unlikely.

I recently bought a bellows kit and Leica copier and hope that this film can be used to make slides from B&W negatives.

It's an excellent film - essentially FP4+ without red sensitivity - I like its colour sensitivity much more than FP4's. Unlike most Ortho films on the market, it's a normal (can be boosted where needed) contrast film. Wonderful for pebbledash and textures. Boost the contrast up & with the right subject matter you'll get something of the wetplate look without needing to play with noxious chemistry. More importantly, it helps safeguard a crucial technical/ darkroom/ masking film in Ilford's range.

And MGV is presumably bringing the RC papers in line with Classic FB etc - finally!

So the current Classic FB already gives the claimed benefits of MGV, namely better blacks and wider mid tone range. Was this something that Ilford claimed of Classic FB or something that you concluded from your use of the paper, Lachlan

Thanks

This isn't new film at all, just different confectioning of an existing emulsion. Bit of a let down. Still, at least it wasn't more disposable camera junk in the end.

So not a new film just now available in 35mm and 120.

The film has been around for decades I have a data-sheet from the 70's when I used it a lot for work as a copy film when it was called Ilford Ortho, it went through minor changes (not noticeable in use) and was sold with SO (special order) numbers before becoming Ortho Plus. It's a very nice film in terms of grain and sharpness I agree with Lachlan it's very similar to FP4 but of course its Orthochromatic and you need to be aware it's speed drops a stop in Tungsten lighting to 40 ISO, FP4 is 80 ISO in Tungsten light.

We used it or FP4 with the same development times and achieved the same contrast.

I just got the official press release from Robert's Distributors (Ilford's US distributor)

1. Ilford Ortho Plus in 135/120 format, coming in November
2. Ilford MG V Paper - Yay!
3. Ilford and Paterson Film Starter Kit - This is great for new people
4. Harman Reusable Camera - Comes with battery, a strap, and two rolls of Kentmere film, aimed at the new user who isn't ready to invest in the used camera market. The camera is plastic and comes with a flash. It looks pocketable, and is essentially a point and shoot. Hopefully the lens is good and it allows some control over exposure.

MGVRC is the big news here as far as I'm concerned. The key issue for me is whether they've adjusted the characteristic curve to get rid of the "kink" in the middle of the MGIVRC curve that results in upper midtones that are excessively flat relative to the rest of the tonal scale. None of the Ilford FB papers over the past 30 years has ever manifested this particular attribute (defect, for my purposes), and if they are indeed better aligning the RC paper with FB Classic in this respect, I will be very happy and anticipate using a fair amount of it.

I really didn't expect it, but I think it's quite a great adition to the line up.
Interesting to see how Kodak introduced a high speed pan film last year, and now Ilford takes the complete opposite path, an orthochromatic slow film emulsion.
It's also good news for 120 cameras with a red window, and surely well suited for non coated lenses giving a little bit more contrast.

Hope some film processing tanks for 9x12 and 10x15 films

Wish there are development tanks for 9x12 and 10x15 in their product portfolio.

So if I average the new ortho film with IR film I would get pan film? :wondering::blink::errm::getlost:

Anything new is better than nothing and while hand-held ortho shooting is going to be great I probably won't be buying much of it. If I did it would be in 120. I guess I can put my Kodak 3A Autographic Special back on the shelf for now. At least it got dusted off and the shutter exercised. Now, if Ilford runs some of it in 122 size during their special order run I will buy a bunch. I really can't think of a much better film to run through my Kodak 3A. That is if it really turns out to be ISO 80. I guess time will tell. As for the new RC paper? Yes, I will definitely be looking into that. I was also hoping for a resurrection of Ilfords XP2 developing kit, but there are ways around that. It was handy and worked perfect when I used it years ago. Maybe next year it will be another secret Ilford launch of Cibachrome/Ilfochome developer and paper, but it seems Ilford doesn't want to or can't venture back into color. It's so nice that the good Lord gave us the ability to wish. JW

Just now seeing this "officially"; while it's not real exciting news, it at least gives some hope for ongoing product development and diversification of their product line.

It's far better than Ilford announcing the loss of products.

Small steps on firm ground!

Keep it up Ilford.

I'm trying to remember the last discontinued product announcement by the main photography companies. It's been a pretty good couple of years.

(Now if Ilford's announcement was for true IR film ...)
