Also waiting for the official announcement but if it is indeed Ortho film and could he handled under a safelight, wouldn't that come in handy for slitting it into other formats? I would think that would be really nice for loading 110 and 126.

What a letdown: some papers and Ortho in more formats. Here I was thinking people's guesses of Delta 400 in sheets and closing the ISO gap on 135 were actually realistic..

No, this is awesome. This is basically a technical/micro film ala CMS 20 II only with better distribution and more speed (albeit with a reduced spectral response in both ends).
Not disappointed!
Haven't had time to look at the papers yet.

I have no idea what I'd use this film for but I'll definitely experiment with it. I'm happy.

Ortho 80 isn't a technical-micro film, it is a normal continuous tone pictorial film that happens to have orthochromatic color sensitivity. To me this makes it far more interesting than a micro/technical film, since those films need special developers to tame their extremely high contrast. I've used Ilford Ortho in 4x5, and it develops beautifully in D-76.

Here is some inspiration:
ilford ortho
It's a very high resolution film for its speed.
You could easily get the equivalent of a 150 megapixels from a 35mm frame out of this. Wet printed or scanned.

I'm happy that Ilford is putting out new products.

1. Ortho in 120 and 35mm is a meh for me, but I see that many others are excited. So that is cool.
2. I mostly print with RC IV, so I guess I'll be printing with RC V. I was happy with IV. Will I be happier with RC V?
3. Developing kit with Paterson. This is their most important product release. It show a dedication for recruiting new film photographers and is a good marketing strategy. It makes for all in one shopping for the first time film developer. It will make it easier for the new users. Plus it builds brand loyalty for those new users.

Well, Ilford describes it as a technical film:
"continuous tone copying, medical and forensic applications."
And
"“Our Ortho film was designed as a technical, high-resolution copy film for negatives"

I know there is some differences from a real, document centric, micro film, some of them inherent in the developer, but for actual photos this will be a great alternative to Adox offering (though probably and hopefully not replacing it), which is also derived from a technical film.

I think the forum is perfectly apt.
The "Industry News" forum should rather be used for more general news.
Fitting though would be that Harman for their Ilfod Photo for the first time is applying such countdown, teaser approach in marketing.
Hence the " ;-) ".

Yay!! Ortho film with EI 80 speed!!!

This means for example that one could easily experiment with development via visual inspection. For example people who experiment with reversal processes could better fine-tune their process by actually watching the film as it goes through the processes.

And this is pictorial (continuous tone) film, so very useful really... Moreover, as an ortho, copy film, i'd expect this to be a very fine grained film.

What's that sound? That's the sound of me bagpipes deflating...

And my Harley has seen its own shadow, so back into the garage she goes.

I'm sure the new MG RC is a nice upgrade, but I don't use RC paper, so this is of zero interest to me (no RC paper can come close to the tonality of a fiber paper, IMO). And the repackaging of Ortho Plus as roll film is hardly a revelation either. Its not new, its just an added format. Don't get me wrong, I've used Ortho Plus in 4x5 and liked it a lot, but for an Ortho film its expensive (same price as HP5+) and has little to offer than cannot be had by making paper negatives instead. Meh.

I almost forgot that it was Christmas. This is great news. It's like having original Verichrome without the explosive nitrate base. Good thing I saved my red safelight filters! Imagine you are a teacher in a darkroom full of 9th graders trying to experience film for the first time. No changing bag
