Hey, We will also be there Friday - Sunday.

Jeff, looking forward to seeing you and Eva. Don’t let Eva talk to Cindy, my huntress, about the Turkeys!!! It could get ugly. They have strong differences of opinion.

Just heard from Lee L. He will be with us Fri-Sun and says Shawn will also be here at least Saturday. They are going to shoot in the Park Saturday so if someone would rather go there than the Flats, speak to them. Glad you are coming. The party is pulling together.

Safety Request:

In the past we have had wood for a fire in the camping area. To my knowledge this was only used once. It has been so dry the last six weeks that we are going to ask that you not have a fire this time. The pond water level is down at least a foot and grass and trees are at about tinder level. We would hate to lose the many beautiful blue spruce, our houses and oh, the occasional guest. Please also be careful that you do not park you catalytic converts over tall grass.

This part is not meant as a mixed message. We are going to put three five gallon jerry cans filled with water in the camping area for your safety in the event of an accidental fire. They are not meant as an invitation to start one. If more water is needed there is a hose and faucet on the house wall just behind the grill, near the back deck. Historically 911 service has gotten here in 90 seconds.

If anyone wants to roast a turkey that they happen to meet, please deliver it cleaned to the kitchen. We can roast it in the oven for a share of the meal. Cranberry sauce is already in the refrigerator.

 Eva loves her turkeys. She still thinks they can fly, bless her heart.

I've got the requested enlargers and densitometers boxed up. There are still a couple of enlargers available, including a pair of Beseler 23s with condenser heads and carriers. Also, those fiber dryers as well.

BTW - I've got a Aristo D2 head for an Omega D series enlarger available for sale. Works fine, older bulb. Replacement bulbs are now available again through Aristo - and the replacements are the newer style bulbs as well. Looking to get $50 for this - let me know if you are interested.

"john,

Darla will probably tag along with me. I too have decided not to go the flats as much as I like that kinda thing, but that train affair looks interesting, and some things in the park need much better attention than I gave them on my first visit.

We plan on heading to the coast north of Boston, then just meandering up the coast to the little town of Lubic, right at the border. Have enjoyed the little towns on the way in the past, and just hope for the right weather cooperates to create some images.

I also will mention if there are any shooters out there who shot 220 in black and white, my freezer needs some attention, i have 5 rolls of TXP320 dated 11/09, and 12 rolls of HP5 dated 2/06. All should shoot fine, they have been in my freezer since there arrival here. I have not shot any medium format in over a year, so the possibility of me using them is quite slim. Not sure what the going price is, but I would be happy with $10.00 per roll. If anyone is interested let me know.

Will plan on seeing you Friday evening.

Jim Thompson"

If you are interested PM me and I will send you his phone number. Do this before Thursday afternoon as he will probably be driving most of Friday from the Kalamazoo area.

Dan, have you and Jim met?

.

Is there any doubt? On a hike in the park, going through a stand of pine trees, there was an explosion to the side of the trail. A full grown turkey flew by horizontally at ten feet. Cindy flew by right behind it at about six feet.

At this point I'm planning on showing up sometime Friday (will be after dinner for sure). I can only stay one night so I'll just sleep in the car and Lee and I will be off early Sat I'm sure. Back to see everyone for dinner Sat and then I have to head home. Looking forward to it, wish I could stay for Sunday...

John: if the annotation to this message was meant for me, no I have not had the pleasure of meeting Jim Thompson.

By the way, Eva, turkeys can fly. Sort of. For short distances. When suitably startled. I startled one last weekend and saw it fly...well, maybe it launched itself into space, realized that its wings were no match for its weight and gravity, and crashed back to earth.

Yep.

During our last event, two months ago, he was having a show of some 25 prints in his area.

Dolly asked me to tell you who see color to bring film. The large maple on the west side of our house is turning red. That probably means there will be some in the Park also doing the deed. I am just the messenger. No secondary samples have been verified.

What is color?

I don't know where Jim is from, so I don't know about his show.

John: when I was thinking of coming down in July you kindly provided me with some locations of abandoned things in your area. I am hoping to get there early enough on Friday to do a little shooting in the area before the "Vacancy" sign goes up at your place. Can you give me a little better direction from your place to...

the circular diner near the abandoned Conway freight hub?
the covered bridge 3 miles down the road from you?
the abandoned canal locks and structures in the park?
the 5 or 6 abandoned cars about 5 miles west of you?

Thanks again for setting up the flats outing on Saturday. I am really looking forward to that.

Go to http://www.nps.gov/cuva/planyourvisit/maps.htm

Download a map of the whole park.

Covered bridge:
In the bottom left hand area locate the intersections of Rt. 271 and Rt 77. I don’t know how you are coming in so look at the map for exits.
Go south two roads to Everett.
We live on Everett Rd.
Go east on Everett into the park and down a long hill. At the very bottom of the hill is the covered bridge.

The circular diner near the abandoned Conway freight hub?
This was Dolly’s suggestion and has turned out to be inaccurate. A portion of the restaurant is circular, but it is only a portion. The abandoned freight hub as I mentioned earlier to Jeff is surrounded with fencing. However it is locate about half a mile north of Everett Rd. and Cleveland Massillon Rd. on the east side. The map is wrong there because by then Clev Mas Rd has become Brecksville Rd.

If you are into odd shaped buildings, there is an owner occupied, two story, Octagon house. From Everett Rd. go north on Clev Mas/Brecksville Rd., north of Wheatley, to Rt 303. Turn west or left on Rt 303. Go west through the stop light at 303 and Broadview. The next turn left will be Southern Rd. The Octagon house is at the T of Rt 303 and Southern on the north side of the road. It is a private home so be polite.

the abandoned canal locks and structures in the park?
On your map locate the Cuyahoga River running N/S in the middle of the map. The OH & Erie Canal is the - - - - dotted or hyphenated line going along the river. South of the park it goes through Akron and eventually onto the OH River. There were 37 locks from the south side of Akron to the north end of the park. Most are still there. Then they continue into Cleveland.

For openers go to http://www.facebook.com/profile.php...hotos#!/album.php?aid=3636&id=100000479112834
I have 15 pictures there of 150. Would you like to go to any of the places in the 15? Give me an image number starting upper left as #1 go across to the right and then next row as #5. I can show you more pictures when you are here.

the 5 or 6 abandoned cars about 5 miles west of you?
I’ll drive out there tonight and see if they are still there and report. I may have to show you.

Dan,

I drove out to where in June and July I had seen some abandoned cars in a field and by a barn. I believe there is a restoration shop of sorts in the barn or out building. The place is surrounded with corn fields. The corn is now eight feet tall and I can’t see much of anything. The cars may be there. They may not.

If cars in excellent shape or show cars are of interest I would remind you of something in the second post. There will be a car show in Canton on Sunday with 200 cars. The main theme is cars of Cleveland, but there will be all kinds.

The Glenmore Country Club in Canton, about half an hour south of here will have the 16th annual gathering of significant cars featuring Historic Motorcars of Cleveland, Cars of Giotto Bizzarrini - and Duesenberg!

45-60 minutes

It is a great show. We have been several years. In addition to the show they always have a group of unique sports cars parked out in front of the country club. A couple of times we have taken the Speedster to that.

(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

how did the abandoned cabin / buildings look? any potential?

Nothing more than I said at the time. It is a cabin with no track in that I have seen on the other side (from the road) of a violent stream. It is down Everett Rd. just before the cut over to Wheatley road, very close to the covered bridge.
