Ignoring people gives them the power to say what they want unhampered.

Ignoring someone is like using the off button on the television remote: sure the guy is out there somewhere saying something to someone, but at least you don't have to listen to him.

This suggests that by reading what conflict-driven personalities say that you somehow have the power to constrain their speaking of objectionable thoughts?? I don't think so!

Argue against what you find objectionable.

I've found it to be true that arguing with strangers on the Internet is the most pointless activity possible. If someone wants to express an objectionable idea, they will find a place to say it on the Web, and the more they encounter opposition, the louder their voice will become. Its the irresistible force paradox, manifest.

I've have found doing this to be a PITA for this site, its membership and management. For whatever reason
the people I typically argue against often times are winging it, and are not well versed in anything they are talking about,
so it becomes a futile effort. I would rather turn the squelch up and attempt to ignore people that are like that.
I am at a loss though because once in a blue moon the folks I have on ignore say something that may be of some value,
and I miss it. ... kind of like detecting "cosmic rays" that allegedly fog film. they don't happen often but when they do,
they do.

Exactly, if you ignore or fail to respond to someone who is passing on untrue or bad information, then you are adding in the spread of bad practices, ideas that cause damage in some form or outright lies.

arguing with strangers

Argue against the thing you disagree with, not against the person saying it. Say why you think what you do. That's how actual argument - the productive kind - proceeds.

When you've made your case, you can ignore any unsubstantiated postulating or, as @jnantz said, "winging" - you don't need to argue past the point of saying, "Give evidence," to anyone making unfounded claims.

If you don't do as much as that, you're allowing them to be the one convincing others.

I always used to advise clients that arguing with police officers was the most pointless activity possible.
But arguing with strangers on the internet may come close.

the problem is when that happens and they have no evidence they start name calling, riffing and making stuff up.
it's all pretty useless, not much one can do about that but ignore it.
I'd rather watch re-runs of "Flavor of Love" staring Flava-Flave.. now that's a better reality !

name calling

Yes. But at least they still don't have any evidence to back up their unsubstantiated claim. Name calling is not part of an argument.

Every bit of unchallenged misinformation has the same power as thoroughly proven truth.

exactly, yes I am well aware of this ... but it empowers them to continue diatribes, borderline slander/reputation smearing name calling and forwarding agendas that continue every thread you encounter them in. You try to correct the record with evidence of "the thoroughly proven truth" but folks bypass what they don't like and continue.

its fruitless. and a waste of time, especially because it usually is the same old nonsense that triggers people and changes a whole thread from a lighthearted happy one about whether or not someone should use a 45ºviewer on their sinar if they are over 6 feet tall, but 30 remarks back and forth about something entirely different ...I'd rather talk about the viewer than be "that guy" who displays someone's woefully uninformed opinion about something that might be as common as a spork... and gets them even more riled up and argumentative the next time someone post something that is offensive to them.

There are 7,800,000,000 people on the planet, most of whom are wrong, and only 24 hours in a day, so you have to pick your battles.

While you are not wrong in these statements, if you approach ANY web forum with the idea that substantiated facts are going to satisfy those who thrive on conflict, and displace misinformation 100% of the time, then you are misunderstanding the core nature of internet discussion forums. This forum is certainly no exception. Too often, facts have little to do with anything.

I file this under name calling.

couldn't agree with you more.
people don't care about "facts"
its all opinion based, and if someone disputes
their opinion as based in untruths, then it is an "attack"
so they attack back. I mean some of the nonsense
that people post is mind boggling.
I'd post a link but I might be banned for a week if I do
all I can say is the lunacy of this comic book series never fails to entertain
No... Kodachrome.
you are woefully misinformed this is about lomography and holgas

I visited the Lisbon (Portugal) Leica Store and was taking a look at the shelves of film cameras (that every Leica Shop I’ve ever visited has).

A salesman came and asked me if I needed something. I told him I was just taking a look at the beautiful cameras that, unfortunately, I couldn’t afford at the moment.

Then, he asked if I was a photographer. I confirmed and told him I was even carrying two Nikons in my bag at that moment. He told me to keep them in the bag, so they wouldn’t be embarrassed by all the Leicas around them.

I left the store as soon as I could.

I was in a Leica store once and a sales person approached me (I had a camera bag) and asked if I had a Leica. I pulled out my Leica with a Zeiss lens on it and got a dirty look, sort of "shame on you!"

I have a Hasselblad and a fair share of Zeiss glass. I trust them. I trust them more than any Leica glass I haven’t used (I haven’t used any  ).
