I have since switch to all deep tank developing, and for the last few years I've only been using hp5 in 4x5, Ive recently tried some txp because of a few of my earlier portraits inspired me to try it again. Ive been playing with xtol-r. Still trying to dial in times for the combination. 9:45 in deep tank prints a straight print at grade 1 - 1.5

I use Foma a lot and I'm perfectly happy with it. I don't know the cost elsewhere but here in Europe the prices for 50 sheets 4*5" are currently (May 2025, online at Retrocamera.be):
Fomapan 400: € 45,99
Tri-x 320: € 291,99
Tmax 400: € 340,99

Ilford HP5 is not available in 50 sheets, but 100 sheets is € 211,99

Is Kodak so much better that it justifies a 6x to 7x higher cost? Ilford, more than twice the cost?

I would say ilford yes and Kodak no. But I currently shoot only ilford.
