The next “Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day 2016” (WPPD2016) is at hand: Sunday April 24th, 2016.

So NedL and I would like to ask you all to post a link here to your pinhole photograph from that day, as soon as you uploaded it to the WPPD Gallery (see also: http://www.pinholeday.org/participate/). You could also post some images here, if you like.

And remember: you have still ample time to tinker up a simple pinhole camera and get some film or photo paper to shoot with. Need help, tips or inspiration? Check this out: http://www.pinholeday.org/support/

What is WPPD-2016 about?
New to pinhole photography or WPPD?
“Anyone, anywhere in the world, who makes a pinhole photograph on the last Sunday in April, can scan it and upload it to this website where it will become part of the annual Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day celebration's online gallery.” http://www.pinholeday.org
There will be several workshops all around the world on this day. You don’t have to have experience or a pinhole camera yourself, there are often extra cameras available to use (but ask in advance). You can locate a local event here: http://www.pinholeday.org/events/index.php

Last year I seem to remember that I only just finished my 16x20" huge box-cam, but then the weather was shite and I didn't get outside.
Hopefully it's a lot better this year, really want to get some good shots with that thing (and my nopo)

I did it the first year I was in APUG and took color negative photographs. I had signed up for an exchange. Mailed out many photographs all over the world but I only received prints from about half of the others in the group. I never bothered again. I might do it this year. Or I might not. I am both undecided, ambivalent, wavering and uncertain.

SG: you might be thinking of the annual pinhole photo exchange? For WPPD, you share one image on a website with thousands of others from around the world.

This year I'm starting from what I want my prints to look like and working backwards to the camera design. I'm thinking of printing 8x11 and 6x11 negatives onto 11x14 paper. So, two cameras, and a sheet of 11x14 photopaper will supply a negative for each camera. That's as far as I've gotten, but I'm leaning toward a curved plane for the 8x11 camera... haven't started thinking about the 6x11 yet! They will be simple foamcore or mat board creations as always.

SG, I promise you: if you'll send me a pinhole print, I'll send you two in return. All to support WPPD this year.

No, quite a few years back here on APUG we had a WPPD print exchange that a bunch of people signed up for and the results were a bit disappointing. One guy in the group of four I was in seemed to disappear off the face of the earth (which of course could happen, some of us ain't exactly teenagers!)

Dave and SG, I remember (there was a url link here which no longer exists). It was before my time.

I might be willing to do some print exchanges after WPPD, but I'd want to wait until I actually see what my prints look like first! :D
Maybe we can have an informal exchange of existing prints in this thread after WPPD is over and we know what we have.

I wouldn't mind swapping some prints, but it's going to be at least June before I print anything (mega busy on uni assignments until then, I can swing a bit of an afternoon taking pics but not a day printing).
That, and posting 16x20" prints may get a bit ridiculous on the postage. I could always do an 8x10 or something to swap though.

Count me in for uploading to the website - I'll be using a Zero Image 2000 (6x6). It'll be at least early May before I can have the prints ready though.

Well, we can see what happens. This is the third year in a row that the art club I am way too entangled in is having its membership exhibition closing reception, award ceremony, and removal on the afternoon of WPPD. Kinda crimps my wander-around-half-the-state style! (I refuse to accept the title, but I probably do at least 85% of the work someone titled "show chairperson" would do.)

I've managed to do something and send it to the WPPD site every year since I discovered the event in 2005. That was part of the impetus to get back into B&W film and darkroom work. (Though I did shoot color & B&W in 2008 taking advantage of the Bronica interchangeable film backs.) I will probably go with the 8x10 again this year, run out in the fairly early morning and shoot a few to process the next day or two. Haven't zeroed in on a target yet, but I'll think of something ...

It might be better having Worldwide Pinhole Photography Week.

As I recall, they did that a few years back when the usual date was Easter Sunday. I don't consider the situation a big deal, the dates for this club show have moved around quite a bit and will probably move again, it just limits a bit how much time I can invest in the actual day. Lately I've been making noise about "retiring" from some of that stuff (like doing their newsletter for 22 years! ) to celebrate turning 75 this summer. But this is a not atypical volunteer run group where about six people do 95% of the work. It seems to be a fairly gray haired demographic of right-brained folks who are totally helpless in using computers as tools, etc. :whistling:

You're shooting a fast pinhole! Mine are mostly closer to f/300.

Wow. How do you make f/300? The Zero Image is f/138 and I thought that was slow.

It all depends on the format and the pinhole-to-film dimension, on an 8x10, f/200-something is still a fair-sized hole. My 8x10 is about 0.56mm at 153mm from the film, so about f/275. The 4x5 is a 0.30mm 62mm from the film for about f/210. These are based on some of the usual fudgey calculations for an "optimal" hole. But that optimum has some variations to play with. Some of the sharpest images I've seen in the WPPD galleries often come from Zero Image cameras, so they obviously know what they're doing! (Again, assuming sharpness is the goal! :whistling:)

Also, when one does dimple-and-sand there does not have to be any particular correlation between the needle size and the hole. The point of the needle is used to raise a small bump which is then sanded off to open the hole. I mean, obviously a large knitting needle won't work, but the needle is not used to actually pierce the shim stock.

f/130 or f/140 is about right for you and bergytone on 6x6. Larger formats will tend to have bigger f-numbers for a similar angle of view. Although that's only about a 2 stop difference. On paper negatives, my exposures are anywhere from about 15 seconds up to an hour or more.

I actually made an error when I said f/125. It is actually f/212. Laser cut .4mm pinhole at about 3 3/4" inches to the film plane. I've shot with it already, and I'm quite pleased. I had to add a tripod socket to the bakelite case and a shutter cable release socket to it to make it film ready.

I painted the front teal color so I could tell it from my other (un-modified) Hawkeye.
