That's street photography, no ? See something flash in front of you that may be interesting, take the photo. If you're stopping for a considered shot, you've normally missed the moment.

Well you could take that approach, but I would like to think it could be more considered.

That's probably why most of what passes as street photography is crap. Nobody's thinking.

This whole thread, beginning with the OT, is like something teens would post about favorite pop stars.
Are you sure about that.?
I would say this thread has been mostly the opposite.....that Meyerowitz Is Not A Favored Star.
Where do i buy a Jimmy Page dragon suit, or buy a Marshall Major, or use small strings so they can "Sound just like Jimmy".
There is "nobody" here wanting to be just like Joel, or use a Leica. :wondering:

You asked why: Accidentally...I noticed that two or three good adult photographers posted, so I wondered what they had to say.

And now you know those two or three adults are teens posting about pop stars apparently. ok, thanks for sharing.

Thanks Doughowk for the link, and Ste_S for the Candid Frame suggestion, which was good listening. Always more to learn.

I don't think you really get street photography ? Given that you're looking to capture something that only exists in a few seconds you're mostly relying on instinct for the initial shot. It's insulting to say that (good) street photographers don't think - the best are very good instinctively, and know where to be at any given moment.

You are just trying to be a curmudgeon and for no reason. Opinions are very divided in this thread. Lighten up a little.

I do not like Picasso, I do not like Jackson Pollock.
I like Rembrandt, i like Norman Rockwell, i like Garry Winogrand and i like Dorothea Lange.
I am not sure what i think about Joel. I like SOME of his stuff.....

I have just read these lines and for some reason that must be hidden in my brain I couldn't help but think of the lines of the song "Escape "

"If you like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain
If you´re not into yoga, if you have half a brain
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape
I´m the love that you´ve looked for, write to me, and escape"

To an extent the lines seem to scan in a similar fashion.

Not a disparaging reflection on your quote - just what came into my mind. I hope you can appreciate my bit of "whimsy" Sometimes threads need to a bit of humour. It's the equivalent of the lime juice that prevents scurvy when voyages last a long time :D

FWIW, I like some of Meyerowitz's work but I don't think he's in the same league as his contemporaries like Winogrand. And while I do appreciate his enthusiasm for photography and applaud his ability to make a long career out of it, I agree with other posters that he seems more adept at talking about photography than actually practicing it. Stephen Shore was also mentioned in this thread. While I do like much of what he did in his heyday, I simply can't stand to hear him talk for more than a minute. Very little more than psychobabble IMHO.

You could always make sure that I made love at midnight in the dunes of the cape. Currently in the U.K. climate in May I may very well not survive :D

I like some of his images, others not so much. I'm sure that won't change anyone's opinion.

About 30 years ago, a couple who had a home on the Cape (Truro) invited me to their home to see where they had hung some of my work they had purchased. On the same wall were 2 originals from Meyerowitz's Cape Light series. They were amazing in person. I liked that series before then, but seeing them in person was a real treat. I sort of jokingly asked them if they could move mine to a different wall, but they laughed and said no...

From a brief google search of his pictures I think they are way cool.
He has a great eye for form, colour and composition. His picture on the whole are calming, the use of pastels helps with this, but his b&w do similar. There is no great human connection with his people subjects other do very well, but I feel hes not trying to. Think his style is often emulated, but few do it so well.
Havent seen his videos, don't care for lectures.

Can you please show me any picture taken by Joel Meyerowitz that shows great composition and explain why?

I do not list him among my "Favorite Photographers"
I would say these are a few examples, from JM, that are good photographs..

I stand corrected, as the last one is quite a good example of good composition. But the others for me are not.

Much of his work I really don’t care for. This, in particular, evokes fond emotions for me. Pleasant childhood memories.
