I wish Sean would have cut her (and Emulsion mag) a little more slack.

Conversely, it would have been smart if Aggie had appreciated the favored treatment she received from APUG and not been a divisive influence.

As one that supported this venture with only a limited expectation of it succeeding, and who has given up waiting for issue three I feel that the effort required from the publisher in posting an occasional progress report here was minimal; and therefore long overdue. I can accept that the venture proved too much of a burden for those involved and that it has now been abandoned, and a simple statement to that effect would put the matter to rest.

I did everything I could, not sure what else I can say because it's a private issue. Some events transpired that made it impossible for me to continue a friendship with them. I wish them well, it's great to have a traditional magazine out there..

No apologies necessary, Sean.

I have been on one end of a personality-fed conflict here and to say that I merely appreciated your efforts in that mess would be the understatement of the century.
I have no question, even without any information about that situation, that you did all that was humanly possible - in fact - HEROES work would not surprise me in the least.

You do one thing that is REALLY impressive - with all that must go on in attempts at conflict resolution, it is easy to attack an adversary - to prove a point. As far as I know you have NEVER done that - choosing to protect the "enemy" at the (considerable) cost of leaving some of us to wonder what happened.
That must take a considerable amount of self-discipline ... and is, without question, the noblest of all paths.

I will strive to do that myself.

Photography MUST be an ART. Proof? Photographers are as intense and act the same way as all other artists - don't they?

Ed;

I second all that you have said. I have been at one end of at least two conflicts here regarding the science, not art, of photography. These are very trying conflicts and Sean and staff have been able to maintain objectivity warning all sides with an even handed manner to behave.

It becomes very difficult to be calm and level headed when attacked on a personal or professional level. Sean and company have given advice to all concerned to move us on along.

My thanks to him and the staff.

I think it appropriate to add that I send along my best wishes to those who we are discussing here and others with whom we have had disagreements and who have chosen for one reason or another to leave.

It's one thing to voice your opinion based on your personal experience but to comment on the experiece of the advertisers is inapropriate. How could you possibly know what that situation is?

Granted, the ball has been dropped with several subscribers but we should stick with what we know. Personally, I know what the advertising situation is and it's a sweetheart deal. If the magazine dropped dead right now (I have no idea either way) the advertisers wouldn't be out anything.

Good luck with all of this. If you or yardkat need copies I can mail some to you as I have several copies of each issue.

Alan.

three issue and out, yea I have been in advertising and this isn't a sweet deal having the subscribers upset and knowing who is supporting this mess.
And if the advertisers after 3 issues feel they are clear and feel they got a deal, then that tells you why we are not getting any magazines. backing a three legged horse isn't my idea how to spend my money. I'll keep my B&W and lenswork subscriptions first and formost.

I agree,
Sean has done more for people than anyone I have seen. I don't know the situation here but seeing how she handles the paying customer, I can't even picture (or visualize) what happend here.

All well and good Alex, but that still dates from May. This is near the end of September. A lot of water has gone under the dam since then. Are we going to cut John some slack the same way?????

I appreciate your comment, but the last comments that are meaningful date back to MAY!

Sorry, but your information changes nothing.

Aggie and I talked on the phone twice almost a year ago. She is charming and energetic and very knowledgable about photography. She asked me to write an article about emulsion making and coating. I said I might be willing. I never heard from her again. That is about 1 year ago!

hey alex

the post that ron was looking at was from may,
the thread i started on the large format forum
you need a user name and password to get to it, since it is in their "lounge" ...

it would be great if john got going again, but from what i understand
he has decided not to be involved in the photographic business anymore.
it is a huge-loss for everyone.

Alex,

We're all now totally confused.

The links you posted earlier appear to be to from a very active, recent thread regarding Emulsion on the LF site.

Yet you and jnanian are now exchanging posts about a May thread regarding John and his ill-fated film enterprise.

Meanwhile, poor PE seems to be totally befuddled.

What gives here?

Is Emulsion about to release it's long-delayed fourth issue - somehow created in Mexico etc.

"Enquiring Minds Want to Know"!

Let's try this again. Since the links I posted don't work for everyone, I'll quote the two posts. I was asked by the originator to make this information available here on APUG. If anyone has a problem with that, let me know and I'll ask the Mods to delete this. These posts were made by Jorge.

Well, I finally got in touch with Aggie and here is the skinny on the publishing problems and unanswered e mails.

Let me start with the publishing and the third issue. While Aggie was here in Mexico, a friend volunteered to do the lay out of the magazine. On the same week this person volunteered his mother passed away. Understandibly the magazine layout took the back seat but Agiie was not notified, the delay was further exarcerbated by Aggie being overseas taking some workshops. So while the issue is complete (all articles are in with photographs) it has not been laid out and sent to the printer, she assured me this will happen next week and the issue will be out.

The unaswered e mails, frankly was lack of attention to details and someone trying to do too many things at one time. Apparently someone did not pay attention to the e mail filters and the Emulsion web site ISP was deleting all the e mails that appeared to be SPAM. She is now in the process of changing ISP and assured me that this will not happen again.

Now, what I would like to have done by the members in this forum is for those who have not received their issues to send me a PM or an e mail giving me your name, issues you are missing and your address so I can compile a list and send it to Aggie. SHe promised she will stay put for the next couple of months and take care of all of these problems.

Yes Howard, Volume two is out in the works. In fact beleive it or not, she and her team are working on laying out issues 5, 6, and 7 as we speak. I had the chance of seeing issue 4 and I think it is going to be a pleasant surprise for many and worth the wait.

Look, what it comes down is this. Some mistakes have been made due to carelesness, lack of management and direction and plain ol biting more than one can chew. Aggie is more than aware of this, many of us who know her are urging her to take care of these problems and she is working on this as we speak.

In her defense, money is tight, she is working with a team which are mainly volunteers and are receiving no pay, that includes the contribuitors as well as those submitting articles. So as it is always the case, you get what you pay for.

In a nut shell, we are hoping she will learn from these mistakes, correct them and move forward to what can be a very positive influence for traditional photography.

Looks like those in charge have been off taking a seminar on business management from Ron Wisner.

Is it really that difficult to own one's deeds?

John and JandC are not a loss for the LF community. He has thousands of dollars that he has taken, kept, not delivered goods on and has refused to answer emails and calls to those he has taken from. THAT PORTION OF THE TMAX DEAL HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH KODAK! That has to do with who he chose to be in light of the deal not working out as smoothly as we would have all liked. I don't find such decisions or the people that make them to be a loss for the community when they disappear from character driven acceptance of responsibility and vanish. As to 'mom and pop' business' being the wave for the future I am all for it and will continue to support such endeavors (as my several thousand dollar outstanding order with John and two year subscription to Emulsion attest to)--I just don't believe we have to accept poor communication, lack of respect and in case of the TMAX order a complete vanishing act as part of the package

Monty,
very well said. and seeing that we have gone to 8 pages on this, and still no answer, proves a lot of people are pissed.

Is this about Emulsion Magazine or a JandC rehash? Is JandC a book, magazine, gallery review or a show?

I'm watching this thread with interest, I'm a subscriber and while I do hope the magazine continues, I know that this type of publishing is fraught with pitfalls and very difficult for a first time publisher.

I have to say I do miss Aggie and her contributions here. I mentioned in a thread once about lusting after a particular camera but could not afford a few grand for it. She PM'd and offered to post her one from the US to Ireland as a loan until I could afford one. I did actually decline but I'll never forget that generosity.

I don't actually know what the falling out was over and its probably not important to know. But I'm wondering if you guys could all kiss and make up? :D

Rev Ian Paisley and Gerry Adams are working together these days. Nice inspiration there.
