....seems like a new size, manageable for 35mm, without the bulk of A4 or the depressing shape of 10x8. Availability seems limited though.

I like to use 11x14 paper cut to 11x7 for printing uncropped 35mm negs. It's a common size paper in the US and readily available from merchants who still sell darkroom supplies. Another option, for those outside the USA, would be 12x16 paper cut to 12x8, which fits the 35mm neg perfectly.

Same here, crop to size. It's a shame to waste the paper, but I'm staring at an unopened box of 16x20 fiber paper right now, and it will have to be cut down because I am enlarging 6x6, 35mm and 6x9, so nothing I have fits 16x20. Even if I didn't have to cut it down I would, because looking at the box, it's not a native dimension that I like.

I agree, 10x8 is not a good compositional size.

What is the source of this 7.5 x 9 paper? I take it this is in inches. It's a new size to me.

Thanks

It's not new, I printed with that size paper when I lived in France. In fact, when I started using 8x10 the other people in my darkroom class were a little perplexed at my "new" paper. There seems to be (or at least there used to) be more available sizes in Europe than in the US. My favourite size is 9.5x12 (a nice intermediate between 8x10 and 11x14) but there is very limited availability of it outside of Europe.

Other than it is smaller paper I cannot work out why it is any better for 35mm. 10x8 fits 35mm better than 7.5 x 9 doesn't it?

Only for contact sheets. For 35mm you get full frame with little to no wasted paper with 7.5x9 (at least, that's the way I remember it).

a 35mm neg is 24mm x 36mm (if my memory serves me correct... ok I better google.. hang on... yes, close enough), 2:3 ratio, so it enlarges to 6x9 inches with no cropping.

B & H has it in Ilford RC: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/161079-REG/Ilford_1771477_Multigrade_IV_RC_DLX.html
I've been seriously thinking about switching over to this size from 11x14.

Matt, it's a nice size - not too big, not too small, just right . Unfortunately B&H only has it in RC paper, and Freestyle none at all. When I've needed to stock up I've always ordered from Europe, especially since I prefer Foma papers for lith printing. I've got a freezer full of it now, I really need to crack down and get printing!

....a number of positive reponses. Just looking at a box of 10x8 puts me right off. 7x9.5 has 'print me' written all over it. Storing large sizes of paper and cutting down isn't reall going to work for me.

I print 10x15cm on 13x18cm paper from 35mm negative and they are wonderful.

I found it listed on the sizes list on the Harman Express website but tried to navigate from there to U.K. stockists and failed to get anywhere. I occasionally browse through various U.K. retailers' sites but the size always seems to jump from 5x7 to 6x8 then 8x10.

18x24cm (7x9,5 inch) has been very popular in Europe for decades if not longer.

18x24 is the Continental metric plate sizeclosest to 10x8, it's a very common size for larger Reisekameras and modern post WWII 18x24 film holders have the same outside dimensions as a 10x8 holder. Paper sizes are exact like glass plate sizes but film sizes are nominal and very slightly smaller because for a number of years film was used in adapters (inserts) in plate holders.

However 18x24cm is approx 7.125x9.5 inches so not quite the same or close to the Ilford 7.5"x9" paper Neil has mentioned, KeyPhoto has it in the UK. So we haven't quite discovered where this new size has come from :D

Not new to me. EFKE, Agfa, Ilford, Kodak,...all have/had 18x24cm papers available here, still have a box of Kodabrom RC I got from a local newspaper some 20 years ago. 8x10 was quite exotic before www vendors.

You've missed my point. I own an 18x24 Reisekamera so know the format and that ilm and paper is available in thet size, I shoot Continetla formats

7.5x9 inch paper is not 18x24, more like 19x23, it's not close enough in proportion.

Thanks Ian. It seems to be only available at KeyPhoto in Ilford Art 300 and not in any other paper. I wonder why Key Photo choses to stock this size but only in Ilford Art?

I still cannot work out why this size is any better for 35mm than other sizes. 7 x 10.5 would be the ideal size. 5 x 7 or even 8 x10 gets closer to the 1:1.5 ratio of 35mm film

Ian, 7,5x9 inch printing paper is exactly 17,8 x 24cm in size. Which is closer to 35mm proportions (2:3) Pentaxuser.

Or maybe I'm wrong. OP states 7,5x9 and not 7x9,5 as in Ilford catalogue, but I think it's a mistake.
