I can't believe it. Here in Lima i can easily find many types of film. Sao Paulo is a city that is well more developed and bigger than mine, there should be at least 24 stores with film there!!

Yeah, it's really unbelievable! The photo gear shops in downtown São Paulo have very little film to sell at exorbitant prices. I mean, if you're looking for Kodak stuff like Ektar, T-Max and Tri-X or Fuji Provia, you'll have to look in a handful of shops and, maybe, come out with empty hands! Even Ilford is hard to find, as the exclusive distributor in Brazil sells directly to end-users, eliminating any competition, right from the start.

Some of these very same shops in downtown sell smuggled film. And the prices are outrageous.

If you're looking for consumer films (Kodacolor Gold Plus 200 and Fuji Superia X-Tra 400), it's easier. You may find something here and there, but it isn't easy to figure out where. It's kind of a gamble, really.

And, like I said in another thread, Kodak-Alaris Brazil stopped selling any large- or medium-format film, even if you place a special order. You can only get color negative in 135 format and the only B&W film available is Tri-X.

Just imagine: São Paulo is the biggest city in Latin America!

Fellow Brazilian APUG'er Michael Guzzi — who lives in a city close to Porto Alegre, a big city in the south of the country – told me the situation in Porto Alegre is not that much different, maybe even worse.

Unfortunately, the D-cameras have dominated here. We are just the crazy guys that spend money and time and deal with nasty chemicals to take pictures the way we like to.

I don't really care. As long as I can buy from B&H, Freestyle, Maco and Foma, I'll be OK.

Did you feel the earthquake up in Ferrania?

A bit OT but to clarify: the earthquake was very far from Ferrania. Certainly no damage at all at their factory.
The earthquake was quite strong. It woke me up twice during the night, and both times I got up and went under the main beam in my apartment. I am on the 2nd floor, and I live in Rome. People living on the 8th floor must have felt it quite strongly.

The earthquake was, in the map attached, somewhere between Rieti and L'Aquila, which you will find north-east of Rome, while Ferrania is North-West of Italy, in the Liguria region, in the province of Savona (Ferrania is the name of a fraction of the comune Cairo Montenotte, SV).

The amount of victims in the earthquake-struck towns was disproportionately high due to exceptional cirmustances: the earthquake happened during the yearly season peak for those towns. During winter the population is 1/10th than what it is in the peak of summer. During deep night everybody is, naturally, at home sleeping. Two weeks later, 6 hours later, the amount of people involved would have been drastically inferior.

My thoughts and condolences to the people at the Umbria region. Strange thing is, my parents were there last month and they just returned to Lima last week.

Exactly, that's why i was so surprised. Although we all know that it is the most EXPENSIVE city in latin america as well, and it seems that this is true even for film stock...
But yes, the best is to buy directly.

Yes, Ferrania is much further north of the epicentre. Ferrania come to my mind too when i heard of the news. At the time the death toll was only 6 confirmed, i see its now over 250. My condolences to those affected...

As others have noted (thank you!) Ferrania is quite a distance from the epicenter of the recent earthquakes. We were unaffected, and fortunately for us, none of our team lived or had relatives in the area. The earthquake was a tragedy on many levels and of course are hearts are with those affected, but our team and the LRF are just fine.

I really hope these guys make it. I think that the scale of the operation is in the favor of success. Having a small coating line means you get it running stable and as long as people buy the product Ferrania can just keep it going along at a nice smooth speed.

It takes courage and a lot of money to swim against the industrial tide and I hope that this venture by Ferrania takes off. Whilst there are enough (just) manufacturers to keep the supplies going, more names coming back into the market can only be for the good of the trade and hobby.
