My birthday is December 2nd, so when I get up in the morning there will be a nice new Harman Photo bicycle waiting for me. With streamers coming out of the handlebars 😁 🥳😀

Well I wrote to Ilford and received a reply My take from the reply from Ilford is that the good news is that it is not a scam There is something coming but it will be under the Harman name In terms of specifics each of us can read into the message what we believe it may be or more certainly what it is unlikely to be

Yes my suspicions were unfounded and I suspect some of us may have got closer to what's coming than others but the what may still surprise us pleasantly I hope and not leave us underwhelmed

Here is the reply
Thank you for your email. This is indeed a genuine announcement.

We are aware of the excitement and speculation around our upcoming product launch – that was very much our intention, and we hope people will be very pleased with our news. We have also seen some frustrations as people are keen to know what we are launching and don’t want to wait. This is very understandable.

Hopefully, you have picked up from the information released so far that this product will be under the HARMAN Photo brand and not the ILFORD Photo brand for reasons that will become clear. We have set up new @harmanphoto social media channels for this and this will be the best place to find information first – there will be no information on the ILFORD channels or website. Nb. I believe we are sharing the launch date shortly on our Harmanphoto IG account.

As you have also seen, we have been sending this new product out to testers, content creators etc ahead of launch and they were allowed to share the news something is coming (the postcard you reference) but the other information such as the product itself is under embargo. This is so they have time to test the product and create content but also so we have time to finish making the product, communicate with our distributor and retail network, ship the product around the world so it is in stores on launch day, build a new website etc etc.

Therefore, you will be pleased to know there is no conspiracy or scams – but unfortunately you will need to wait a little longer to find out what we have been up to!

Best regards,

Matt

It’s just so strange. But at least now we know their graphic designer has learned the mirror tool and the gradient tool, so with another month of practice just imagine what they will be able to do!

As I told you.

Yes as did others but never let it be said that I do not admit to be wrong in my suspicions. However, hopefully we are collectively pleased that I obtained the reply from Harman and it allows us now to only speculate on what the "what" is that's coming

Mind you I still find it strange that more thought did not go into the timing of the whole thing and I don't think I am alone in feeling that way here on Photrio. I'd have thought that if all the "ducks have to be in a row" prior to the announcement which makes complete sense to me then waiting a little longer before making any announcement might have made sense

However to mangle a line from the great poem of the 1890s Yukon Gold Rush "The Shooting of Dan McGrew"

"I am not so wise as those marketing guys but strictly between us two
The Matt guy who advised will present a great surprise for me and you"

Yes, I admit to the scanning being slightly off. A bit like Jake LaMotta's in his poem rehearsal in "Raging Bull" 🙂

What do you mean? They make an announcement about a month before the launch, which gives the market ample time to get cooked up and the retail channel to reach out to Harman so they can get their hands on whatever it's going to sell them in a timely fashion. I think it's a very reasonable timing.

The only thing that may not be as fortuitous is a product launch this time of year. In my mind, around March or April would have been smarter, which is the season when people pick up their cameras en masse. On the other hand, why miss out on a couple of months' worth of sales only to delay to spring season? And this way, they get the holiday season as a nice head start.

How are they going to keep a lid on the conspiracy all the way until 12/1? Every retailer is going to know what the secret is before that.

The only thing that I meant was that once it was sure that what may have been the planned date of 1st Dec was definite it might have then been able to lead us in with a shorter timescale

Looks like I may have to retreat back across the Rubicon 😁

Is this the ilfordphoto IG as in Instagram account? If so then you have to join Instagram to see it?

Thanks

Since it's also a "story", you have a limited time during which it is available to watch: 24 hours or until they remove it - whichever comes first. But you're not missing out.

They make an announcement about a month before the launch,

They made the initial posts more than six weeks before the launch: in social-media terms, a lifetime. Then they maintained silence for about a fortnight.

What they displayed on the new website included images of facebook and instagram icons, but none of them worked as links to the relevant accounts.

Their existing websites (Harman Tech and Ilford) didn't link to any of the new stuff, or even mention it.

So I don't think it was unreasonable to doubt the authenticity of this. And I still say it looks pretty ham-fisted as a genuine launch, while it would have been quite cool as a hoax.

Still, I look forward to seeing a new product. Won't be holding my breath over it for a whole month though.
