It's so sad to learn that Ted is no longer with us, I am really sorry for your loss, Amy. Even I never met him, but I heard a lot good things about him and I saw his contributions to the photographic community, he will be missed dearly.

Take care,

Alex W.

Amy and friends of Ted...please accept my condolences. So very sorry to hear of his passing.

I met Ted face to face for the first time at the Gathering last Saturday afternoon. We had traded e-mails in the past, and I was looking forward to attending a workshop with him next month. He was a generous soul who will be missed.

but I felt it was important to let his many friends here know that my husband, Ted Harris, passed away unexpectedly this evening, at our home in Enfield, New Hampshire.

Dear Amy
I am so sorry to read your posting here and to hear of the sad news of Ted's passing. I was not privileged to have known him personally, other than by recent emails, but of course I know of him, as so many here did too.
My heartfelt wishes go to you in this most difficult of times. I hope you find the strength you need and I join with others to celebrate his life as well as to feel your loss.
With warmest wishes
Tim Rudman

Thank you

I don't know how I can adequately express my thanks for the overwhelming kindness and regrets at Ted's passing, both posted here and received offline. He would have been quite humbled to know that the respect and affection he felt for all of you was returned in kind so completely.

Several of you have asked me what you might do to make a memorial donation in Ted's name. If you wish to do that, you can memorialize either of the two great passions in his life through gifts in his name to:

NEADS (Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans)
PO Box 213
West Boylston, MA 01583
(978) 422-9064
www.neads.org

or

Vermont Center for Photography
49 Flat Street
Brattleboro, VT 05301
802-251-6051
www.vcphoto.org

I have asked both organizations to please send me a list of donors so that I can express my thanks as well, in addition to those of the organization for your gift.

Whether or not this feels appropriate to you, I am immeasurably moved by the communications you've taken the trouble to send... thank you for helping me and our family through this very difficult time.

Laura and I just recieved the news as we were up North , and we are very sad indeed, the days we spent with Ted were great fun and he impressed me greatly to think that he would travel to our workshop and give willingly his knowlege to young photographers when he was obviously in much pain.
Each day he made the point of calling and seeing how you were first and formost before the day began and at the end of each day, and it shows me what a loving person he is.

Our deepest sympathy to you and your family . He will be very much missed by our community.

Bob & Laura

I've been out of town and just heard this news. I'm in utter shock and disbelief. I enjoyed the friendship that grew from our exchanges over the last year or so. There was so much we would have been involved with together in the future. Finding it difficult to type, my thoughts are with his family.

I am very sad to hear about this. I regret never getting to meet him. I liked his articles in View Camera and his many posts here and on the Large Format forum. My thoughts are with you and your family.

My condolences for your loss. I only knew Ted through the internet forums, but I will miss his knowledgeable comments. He seemed a kind and sincere man.

I first met Ted last July when I brought my black & white landscape class up to his home and studio for the day to review student prints and talk about image making. We had a great time and learned much about large format photography and Ted's generous capacity to share his great knowledge about all things photographic. Over the last nine months Ted and I shared many phone calls and discussed the progress of the work of my students. I t was great to see Ted last Saturday at the NE Large Format Gathering at his home. He was again surrounded by his friends and some of my students who immensely enjoyed the day both photographing and discussing photography with him.
Ted touched the hearts and minds of many people especially my students. We at the NH Institute of Art will miss him deeply.

Ted, thank you for helping me with my writing. I can not say how much it means to have worked with you, if only one brief time. Your dedication to your work was unbelievable and professionalism in guiding me was so much appreciated. I wish there were other mentors who cared as much as Ted did and shared his passion for helping anyone who asked for it. Ted will be greatly missed.

Amy;

I have never met Ted, but have heard so many good things about him, I feel as if I did know him. Sean and others have praised him as a person and have also praised his good work.

I was saddened to hear about this and I wish you well.

God bless.

Having worked closely with Ted over the past year, this is something I just can't beleive. Ted, you were the real deal!

OMG I only met Ted once briefly at the PhotoPlus Expo in NYC. This was during a contentious and heated discussion I was having around FOTO3. Anyway, I came away from my discussion with Ted thinking,"he's a pretty good guy" and on good terms with him. I'm glad I had this brief meeting with him and can see where those who have known him longer view him as a dear friend. He will be missed and my thoughts are with his friends and family.

Regards, Art.

I too, am shocked and saddened by this news. I was very happy to be able to attend Ted's recent workshop in Toronto which was rewarding in itself. I spoke with him on the phone just a few days ago and he was still generous and helpful and looking forward to the weekend with friends and their photography. My sincerest condolences to all those who are feeling this loss.

Amy,

I, like so many others, am shocked and saddened by the news of Ted's passing. I have known Ted for a number of years, but our visits were usually relatively brief during photographic trade shows or conferences. I will never forget Ted's beaming smile.

I will treasure the phone conversations we had during the past few weeks. During those conversations as we spoke about photography. It was evident that Ted had a burning passion for the medium, and loved to share that passion with others. In his workshops, lectures, and articles he not only conveyed accurate photographic information, but he also provided inspiration for those he came in contact with. He will be missed by many, and the medium of photography glows a little less brightly now that he is no longer with us. His photographs, articles, and the many photographers that he touched will be a lasting legacy to Ted's all too brief visit to this planet.

My warmest thoughts are with you and your family,

John Sexton

Amy...
I am so very sorry for your loss. Ted was a great guy and it was my please in having known him through a few programs here at the Valley Photo Center in Springfield, MA. He was an inspiration and a great font of information.

I am so sorry to hear of Ted's passing, Amy. I knew him not much than by username, but I wanted to offer my sympathy. You will let us know if there is ANYTHING we can do. God be with you.

Memorial Service

Please forgive this one last announcement here, but many folks have written me asking to be informed when we had plans in place for a little time together to celebrate Ted. We're going to be at our house in Enfield, NH, on Saturday, May 17, at noon, and I hope that anyone who'd like to will join our family and friends to help us bring Ted home.

If you have to choose, rest assured that you can celebrate just as appropriately at the Ted Harris Memorial Shooting Weekend -- Bruce Barlow has info on that, write him at BBarlow690@aol.com -- or by contributing to the online memorial website Dave Parker (satinsnowglass@yahoo.com) is putting together for those who have said they would like to "shoot where they are" and share the results online in Ted's memory. My bet is that all of these times will be equally Ted-like, and he'd be glad to know you enjoyed any of them.

I think the thing for me to do is to offer to send you directions to our home in Enfield if you'll write to me with word that you'd like to join us, at tedharris@mac.com.

Thanks again to everyone who's posted and contacted me this week... your support has been of immeasurable comfort.

Amy

Dave Parker has set up a memorial website at Dead Link Removed for people to leave messages, images, and to post images for auction to create a scholarship in Ted's name at the Vermont Center for Photography.
