I've just seen that FILM Ferrania have updated their website. There is information about an announcement of a new product on Sunday 2 April.

Did they ever got P30 under control? Had 2 rolls and nothing to right home about. I guess they did not want to try an announcement on April 1st, Sunday is a good day anyways. I want to support them, hopefully they come up with a product that can go beyond "hey it's film, who cares if any good".

I've enjoyed using P30.

Yaah-booh-sucks to those who insist Film Ferrania is dead.

I'd expect the new product to be P30 in 120 as they've previously said that was their next goal, after stabilising in-house production of P30 in 135 format.

I also like P30, a lot. I don't really have any issues taming it's contrast, and I shoot it at 80 most of the time. 120 would be just fine by me.

Is Ferrania now making enough of P30 in 135 to satisfy current demand and which are the stockists in the U.K.?

Thanks

I've seen it on the websites for First Call and Analogue Wonderland, there may be others.

The only issues that I can recall was coating problems with their first run of P30. They sorted that out. I don't believe they ever had the attitude, "hey it's film, who cares if any good".

I have not followed Ferrania since the first batch came out and lucked out on 2 rolls. At the time my feelings were as in that "quote", film was expensive, seemed like created instant following, yet it had problems, photos and especially Ferrania's rhetoric felt like a typical catch-me-if-you-can ad campaign.

If they got this figured out, then it's good. I'll wait a bit and try it again, especially in 120.

Personally I'm hoping for a revival one day of Ferrania's old Dynachrome product, which was their clone of Kodachrome. Ideally with some sort of revamped modern "eco K-14" process. 😍 I mean if the colour dyes only last one century instead of two or whatever, I'm fine with that!

But any new product would be great news of course.

I'm just hoping I don't have to change the thread title to another: "As of March, 2023, Ferrania to announce ......." 😟

Haha me too 😆

If it's 120 I'll be getting some, if only to play with it and say thanks to the Ferrania team for hanging in there. @aparat and others have done a fine job of showing what this film can and can't do in the "Slow and Steady" thread.

If you like detailed, shadows, then don't expose P30 at its box speed. I'm working down at EI 10-20. Shadows are improved, but still a lot thinner than most films that I use.

Unless Ferrania feel that they can't sell as much 135 P30 as they would like or that they can coat more film than they can convert to 135, I think introducing P30 in 120 is not the smartest thing. At the moment, 135 is where it's at. I mean, with the exception of totally-committed-to-film Fuji, there is no shortage of 120 film, while 135 is basically unobtainium. Ok, things are a little better for BW, but still...

I really hope it's something else than P30 in 120, because, lets admit it, P30 would be be competing with Rollei Retro 80 (at half the price) in 120 market and supply constraints will not work in their favour as much as in 135.

And Rollei Retro 80 has the ability to show a little Wood Effect when used with a 720 filter.

Maybe in the EU its different, but if I go to B&H, and look for B&W 135 film, pretty much everything you'd expect is available--TMX, TMY, TMZ, TriX, Delta 100, 400, 3200, HP5+, FP4+, Kentmere 100, 400, Foma/Arista100, 200, 400, Acros and lots of others. Color is different, of course. They may be caught up on demand on 135, and are looking to add customers who don't shoot 135.

I assumed the news would be 120 film, BUT this quote on their 'about me' page got me wishing for a color film, however unlikely that is.

FILM Ferrania is creating the world’s smallest full-service film factory with the in-house capability to research, design and manufacture color and black & white film for stills and cinema.

I'm 90% colour, so I'm pretty sure you are right. But in the last years my experience when ordering film has been that even for BW (in 135) you just can't expect that some particular film will be in stock when you want it.

As I said, if at the moment they can only do P30 emulsion and they can't sell more of it in 135 then 120 is the logical step for them.

But, what if the new product is not even film? What could it be?

It's possible that I'm wrong to assume we'll be told what the product is on Sunday, as the wording on the website is not quite clear about what exactly is happening that day:

Follow us on social media to be notified about a special launch event on Sunday, April 2nd.

So we might just be told about a launch event rather than what is being launched!

Doesn't the website say "new product"? So presumably this indicates an actual product will be announced but of course you are right that it may not be a film

However given that Ferrania may have some credibility to regain, I'd have thought that the last thing it might want to be accused of is a form of deliberate "hype" that turns out to be just that, namely "hype"

Well what I'm saying is we may just be given details on or before Sunday of a "launch event" for the product, which will then take place at a later date, when will be told what the product is. So with their latest news (29 March) they might just be announcing an announcement of a launch. But probably not.

I appreciate the effort that the small Ferrrania team is making. But for goodness sake, as far as I know, they still have not published a proper tech sheet for P30, or published a curve for it, shared its spectral response or said how they established its box speed. Is it multi-coated? Some might say that it would take too much time and money to provide such information. But how could they have developed their product without doing some sensitometric testing of it? If so, they already have that information, so there is little extra cost in sharing it with consumers. Yet they somehow found the resources to create a pretty box for their product. I have to question if their priorities are in the right place in launching a new product before properly supporting the existing one. Some might say that this is the kind of thing that Lomography would do, saying "Try our hip new product" without giving much guidance on how to use it. But even Lomography is often better than Ferrania has been in that regard.
