Does your F2 make a loud "ping" when you fire it?

Geez, and almost all of those were digitals -- supposedly more quiet? I'd like to see this same video, but with Nikon F2s and F3s and Canon F1s firing away. True, the rate of fire would be slower, but more authoritative.

Plus a motor driven Hasselblad, Speed Graphics with large flashbulbs, Graflexes ...

Getting back to the original theme of this thread. I have dismantled my old bashed up F2 to try and find the wiring short. This F2 does not make a loud ping. I can see on the side of the Mirror Box there is a metal stopper with a small piece of padding that is possibly there to stop a metallic ping when the camera is fired. I am probably wrong but this could be the issue with F2's that do ping. These are a beautiful piece of engineering and a pretty simple job to remove the camera front and extract the Mirror Box. Now to find that wiring short circuit and clean out all the gunk.

Since when? I clicked on it just now and the video is still there.

Oh, and Cholentpot, I agree -- the speedlight toss put the production over the top.
I posted it on this board and it was taken down for being off topic. who ever reported it is a humorless stogy old fart

Did someone say off topic?

I never liked bubble gum.

the notification said the post was off topic, someone reported it, that's just bad karma.

I believe Meg Ryan can do an imitation so good it sounds just like the real thing.

Meg Ryan is so old when she crosses her legs it sounds like a Hasselblad.
(shes younger than me and hit the wall harder)

My left elbow sounds like a Hasselblad.

Hey kids! Don't try to slide into third in a pickup game.

Mine does-I just got it, and the ping when the mirror slaps down is quite annoying.

This may solve your ping problem. On the right side of the Mirror Box is the mirror shock absorber. I could see where there used to be some sort of pad stuck to the body under the spring, so I have used some light seal density foam and this does a good job of dampening the vibration of the spring when the mirror slaps down on it. I suspect that the original foam or rubber blocks were not replaced when serviced, or just rotted away. This reduces the metallic ping substantially. Hope this is of assistance.

Well.......the OP was complaining about a "Ping"...now you are saying "Ring". I would hate for you to remove the wrong stuff.....and then you end up with a Ping instead of a Ring.......

So I was just given an F2a from late '79 that sounded awful.
Mirror buffer was disintegrating goo, the foam on the back turning to powder, dirty, mirror coated with dust, but the meter is active smooth and accurate, the shutter sounds pretty good after a sunbath and about 30 trips on the three slowest speeds.
I scaped out all the bad foam I could reach with a wittled splinter while waiting for the truck to come load the 1928 Ford I've been working on; also dusted and cleaned the exterior and mirror chamber pretty well. To excersise the shutter, I had to temporise a mirror buffer which was originally 3mm foam. I found some ancient but still supple eighth-inch laundry line and Gorilla Glue-d it in place, setting the body in the sun to cure the glue and loosen what remains of the lubricants.
Three hours later, the nice warm body was sounding much better, mlu still doesn't raise the mirror all the way but the ghastly "thwack", almost a ring, was gone, the shutter was quieter, and I bet I could blacken the laundry-line buffer with a Sharpie and take some pictures. Seriously, it sounds fairly respectable next to my Soverised '71.

All of the above is true and accurate, and I promise to give this sadly neglected camera a proper overhaul. Did I mention it's black, with minor brassing? Edit: And also has a bash on the top advance side edge, as well as a pretty clean intenscreen that I don't think I like and might give away. I can fix the bash, but the screen seems hard to focus on.

Thanks, I just wanted to get it to a state where I was not scared to put it through it's paces wjthout jangling it too badly. It's easy to make a mess of a potentially good camera by forcing it when it really needs help, cleaning, and so on. If this one looks good enough inside I just might send it to Sover. Just as it is, rope and all. He'd get it, for sure - he seems to apply the 'primum non nocere' part of the oath to F2.

Seven pages of dribble and one correct answer, I woulder if there is a way of dampening the mirror receiver arm a little without a strip down?

I'm sending my F2 back and will never touch one again. I don't think Nikon got a pro camera right until the F3.
The Nikon F is the SLR that began the shift from Leica and other professional rangefinder cameras and successfully kept ahead of all other SLRs for professionals world wide for decades. Personally, among Nikons, I am partial to F and F2, although for clean design I prefer Leicaflexes.

I only had 2 of my F2A's without film loaded, so I didn't check the others. One didn't ping at all, and the other pinged once I got up to 1/250 speed.
