Here's a sewing pattern notcher. This one cuts a 1/4" x 1/16" notch. The 1/4" is too long. 1/16" x 1/16" would be ideal.

Perfect too. This should be called a film notcher too

I must not be understanding the problem. Seems to me that it's a simple "procedural method" thing. Since you're cutting an 8x10 into four 4x5 pieces, as you cut each 4x5 just put it in an empty 4x5 box (it'll only fit one way); there's no need to turn any sheet over to put the emulsion side down. At this point, one of the four sheets in the box has the original mfr notche(s) and three will be un-notched and ready for a corner clip with scissors. Doesn't matter how many 8x10 sheets you cut before clipping. Take care to keep the clipped off corners from getting anywhere near the box.

For those of you that choose to follow established industry conduct, notching is totally reliable.
Back when I wrassled with several different 8x20 films, I wasn't taking any chances…
A visit to the stationery store and an hour later I made this…

I never had a mix-up since then.

Craft Hole Punch - They come in stars, crescent moons, squares, and loads of other shapes. "Triangle Hole Punch" in Amazon will dig up some for $8-12.

Good to know. Thanks! I'll be looking for it.

Otherwise, similar approach:
A further option would be employing a standard office binder-punch, mounted on a base plate with a additional board on punching height. Adding some guides will enable you to punch several half-circle patterns in the dark.

I found a floppy disk notcher on ebay for $12 plus a couple of dollars shipping. That's my solution thanks to the early suggestion in this thread.

Thanks!

Bad news. A floppy disk notcher makes a terrible notching tool for sheet film. It notches cardboard and thicker plastic just fine, but not film. It tends to cut two of the three sides of the notch and simply bend the notch down.

Now you know. Back to the solution board.

I got kinda frustrated. I thought I had helped.

Mike, see post #32. Give it a try with a sample at hand. If it punches good, then just add guides.

I have a notcher originally used to notch 35mm slides so that you could properly index and insert slides in a tray. It looks just like the pattern notcher but was modified to index on the edge of the slide, I tried it on a piece of 8x10 film I screwed up  and it sort of works but is kind of dull, works better on thicker materials.
