I found 100 feet of 70mm Plus-X Aero down by the bay for about $100 shipped. I'll be testing it out when it comes in.

I wonder how long it will take getting to you? I've seen that as well. I'm tempted to try it.:unsure:.

Well I loaded a 70mm cassette with some new HP5. I bought a week ago from B&H. No spool, no core, just film in an unsealed, rolled up bag, in a nice tight cardboard box. I didn't see any expiration date, hmm, I wonder if Ilford is working off a roll of Royal Navy surplus. :D.

After all the discussion about base versus emulsion thickness, antihalation and paper reflection, it would be nice so see some examples, discussion on the film's photographic performance, tonality, grain, sharpness, contrast, ... etc.

It made it Chicago on Thursday but the arrival date is still set for sometime in July. I'll let you know if it comes in.

Good deal. I weighted by first 70mm cassette re-loaded with the HP5. It's about 40 grams lighter than the Vericolor III roll I bought from a fellow in Israel. I have 3 very outdated rolls, I sacrificed a fourth in the name of exploration. I think I can load it on a reel, that has an accompanying tank. Once it's on the reel the C41 part is easy.
I wish Ilford had some spools. But I'm amazed that there is any "fresh" film at all. I'm going to need more cranking on my nifty Watson 70. Unlike 35mm loaders no clicking or counter.
So much fun!:smile::laugh::whistling:

How's the Israeli stuff? I've seen it too.

Has anyone tried developing this in Pyrocat HD? I've looked everywhere and the combination's missing from every development times table I see. Wouldn't want to botch the roll. There's Rodinal as the safe fallback option, to be sure, but, really… no one?

I know no reason BWXX shouldn't work in Pyrocat HD. I'd look for another film with similar development times to 5222 or BWXX in more than one other developer, and use that film's time for Pyrocat HD as a starting point. Or test with a short cutoff of the 35mm.

Oh, I’m sure it will work. I’ve been wondering about development times. I’ve found them for Kodak Double-X, though, so I’ll try that. Apparently, it’s 11 minutes at 20C at 1:1:100. Might use that as a starting point. But I’ll really have to like the hell out of this film to buy another roll or go bonkers altogether and become an ardent fan.

This was shot on 16mm Double-X and developed in Pyrocat-MC for 15 minutes. I used the times for Pyrocat + Tri-X @ 200 on the massive dev chart as a starting point.

mgs_pyromc_xx_s.jpg

It came out pretty grainy but that's no issue for 120.

Thanks; I've been on a bit of a tear w/ 16mm Double-X (among other stocks) in the last few weeks. Here's a sampling of 16mm Double-X in a variety of developers. All time were taken from the massive dev chart.

_barn_xtol.jpg _bp_parodinal.jpg _clover_tmax.jpg _flur_d19r.jpg _posey_d96.jpg _stream_hc110.jpg

From left to right:
- Xtol stock
- cold Parodinal 1+100, 120'
- Tmax dev 1+4
- D-19, reversal (@100)
- D-96
- HC-110, 1+47

YMMV

Eager to see what it can do in medium format. There aren't any examples above, but Double-X is fantastic under tungsten in my limited experience.

I just ordered some 120 XX.
I need something to kickstart getting back into the darkroom. This may help, we shall see.

I've broken down 400 feet a few times. In a small dark bag.

Not fun, nor simple, but it worked. I store the rolls in empty 100 foot cans.

I just glued a few thickness of cardboard together, stuck a couple nails through it for the 400' and 100' reels and did it in a darkbag. Easy-peasy and cheap as can be.

Whatever works. Good film, and affordable.

I still have a plan to 3D print a Lloyd style bulk loader that will take a 400' roll, so I can bulk load 5222 at reasonable cost instead of paying commercial labor to have someone else do it.

Just curious, but I know almost nothing about 3D printing. I've seen that plan on line. How much would it cost to actually print it?

The only loader I've seen that claims to be for 400' rolls is actually sized for the next larger cine roll at 1000 feet -- and it's too big to fit my Ender 3 build plate in any orientation. One correctly sized for 400 foot rolls, which are around 6 1/2 inches diameter, should be very printable.

I don't know exactly what it would cost to print (this varies some depending on what filament is used and on infill settings -- not to mention how many failed prints you have while trying to get it right) but common filament is between two and three cents a gram, or about nine to fourteen dollars a pound. Of course, you also need to factor in that a piece like this (which requires at least three print runs -- one for the main chamber, one for the film cover, and one for the small parts) will take in excess of twenty-four hours of machine time. If you pay someone to print one for you, expect it to cost between $70 and $200, depending how they value their printer time.
