Nah, I just want people to tell me what to do. Why should I experiment and make any decisions for myself? Where's the fun in that?


Oh, an hour ago I also got my box of Catlab film and one of the little storage boxes, which is very nice. I hadn't realized it was due today! Gonna' have to burn off the roll I've got in now so I can try the catlabs stuff over the weekend.

It might take a week though. Actual real, busy weekend for the first time since Spring. I won't have time to do much, but at the very least I'll take a camera on a walk to get something to throw in the xtol when I have a moment.

As I type that, I realize that I'm even more interested in the pyro they recommend. Or any pyro for that matter. Just because I've used nothing but xtol(home) and Clayton 76(my lab) to date. I should order some so I can compare in the future.

Moose22, it may be that what Catlabs sells which is ZoneImaging 510 is different from Bostick and Sullivan's 510 but there appears to be a very large price difference

B&S want $16.95 whereas Catlabs want $29.95 for the same size but it does provide a 5ml syringe.

Time will tell. These things don't remain a secret forever.

I hope it is not Kentmere 400. If it is, purchasers of the CatLABS film are going to feel like they were fleeced since Kentmere 400 only costs $5.19/roll.

Where did you get your 510 from and what was it about the packaging that tells you it was done by Ilford? By Ilford do you mean Harman in the U.K. or Ilford Japan

If the latter is into packaging chemicals such as 510 then maybe to avoid confusion we need to establish, if we can, a convention. Namely we all call the former U.K. Ilford either IlfordPhoto or Harman Technology and the new Ilford we call Ilford of Japan

Since 17 years!! there have been 2 Ilfords.

In 1998 Ilford Imaging was founded out of which in 2005 as spin-off Harman resp. as brand IlfordPhoto came into existance. On the halide field the former making only colour materials, the latter only b&w.
When Ilford Imaging as manufacturer was dissolved only the Ilford brands survived.

I mean...really, how are we supposed to take decent photos if we don't have the results of spectrographic and RMS granularity testing, as well as notarized provenance of all components?

Shoot a test roll, find the best ISO for your camera and developer combo, make a few enlargements to check the gain. A data sheet is nice but not any means needed. I suspect that someone with a densitometry and an Air Force resolution test chart and a high school grade microscope is doing her/his own testing which will be shared. I plan on a doing a ring around to find my personal ISO with my Minolta 9 as a starting point, then do up a 20X enlargement to get a sense of the gain and resolution.

Why are you hoping? All you need to do is read our product description and infinite follow up posts.
If you can't take our word for it because "reasons", it should be enough to look at the actual film. If you think for one second there is any resemblance, technical or otherwise, to Pan400 (or any other film really) you might want to schedule an optometrists test. This type of comment is not really worth a response, other than to say yet again, the proof is in the pudding and you dont even have to buy a film, so many examples already online from many users. Then, there is no need hope.

So what exactly does "EI ISO" mean? I don't think I have seen that before on any film box. I know what " EI" and "ISO" mean, but "EI ISO"?

Ilford and Kentmere don't appear to be the manufacturer. The UK hasn't been in the EU since Brexit.

I am not sure what "Engineered" encompasses with respect to formulating and manufacturing film.

And then there's the question if CatLABS "engineered" the film at its place of business in Boston, why do they have no technical documentation on the film?

I don't know what labeling rules, if any, apply to either the U.K. or the EU, but whether or not HARMAN finished ("confectioned") this film on contract, HARMAN probably didn't coat it. Post-Brexit, anything HARMAN "makes" isn't "Made in the European Union."
