I made a base for it. Now to start tinkering. The ceiling tile must be raised or set the thing on the floor.

Or make an adjustable table for the easel.

Is the column "just like" a 23C column or are all the dimensions different?

If you want an adjustable enlarging table, I have plans for one from the Peterson's Photographic " Photo Equipment You Can Build" book. I'd be happy to email to you. Otherwise, get some ceiling tiles and make a box that fits the space above it and paint the box black.

Yes, I'd like a copy. My wife's 22 inch high porch table allows full extension, 161mm lens and 4x5 negatives. But she growls whenever I mention it.
The 45H is bigger all over than the 23C. The geared crank works great. The 45 would not work on a 23 column, too short.

Okay..PM me with an email address and I'll get it to you. It will be several emails as it's a large file.

No, I was wondering if the 45H and the 23C have parts in common, like the elevator gears and the gear on the crank.

That would limit me to only using the 5 1/2 135mm lens for 4x5 and smaller 70mm. I put the enlarger on plywood to see what the requirements were with the 161 6 1/2 inch lens, 4x5 glass plates, Negaflat film holder etc.
The ceiling tile could be removed and the head squeezed between wires, joists, and rails, but then exactly where the enlarger could be positioned was not to my liking. But that IS an option as floor space is limited.

Here's a suggestion for you that could improve your options - look around for any of the following (most of them can be found at reasonable prices):
-Arista Cold Light head
-Beseler 45S Dichro head
-Other manufacturer cold light head
-(last preference, but will work) Minolta 45A dichro head. The Minolta is the least preferable because it's high maintenance, and if the Xeon flash tubes go bad, they're expensive to replace.

All of the above will be much smaller profile than the condenser head you have on it now, giving you a good 8-12 inches more extension on the column before you hit the ceiling. The dichro heads will give you the added bonus of being able to do variable contrast printing without all those pesky gel filters. If you're serious about it and budget isn't that big a concern, look for a Zone VI, Oriental, or Ilford VC cold light head for Beseler. They have variable contrast settings, and at least the Oriental and Ilford are programmable so you can do split-grade filtration on your base exposure and your burn and dodge sequences.

A set of Polycontrast filters arrived. 411A. 2 1/4 inches square. They fit in the little drawer. The proper instruction manual for the 45H lists Varigam #407A filters. The manual for the 45M series enlargers lists both. No tabs can be used in either enlarger. There are 7 filters in my set plus a red safe lite filter.
This enlarger is so old Varigam paper was in use. That had to be in the early 1940's.
