Hi Everyone, I'll be there too. My better half and I will be staying in Hawes at an hotel we've stayed at several times before (The Stonehouse). We'll come along on the Friday evening. Has The Greendragon got a good supply of malts? Being a Jock I do like to partake, only a wee one though!!! See you all in a few weeks

Richard (or anyone who knows the area) can you suggest a rally point where we can meet up with those arriving on the Saturday morning?

The point should:

- be easy to find, well signposted, etc.
- have a reasonable amount of car parking
- have something at which people can point cameras while we wait

Off the top of my head (a sparse environment at the best of times) I can think of:

- The Ribblehead Viaduct (car parking, a whopping great viaduct and a pub)
- Aysgarth Falls (car parking a bit up the (steep) road, a picnic area and a good falls, a pub near the car park, falls might be a bit busy...)
- Cauldron / West Burton Falls (limited car parking, a good falls, pubs nearby, might be a bit fiddly for some to find as the signs peter out once you get to the village)
- The Green Dragon (the lazy man's "I'm out of bed and dressed, what more do you want?!" choice, car parking around and about Hardraw village, spout-type falls at the bottom of the garden, it is a pub!)

Other suggestions most welcome!

I wouldn't recommend Cauldron Falls or Aysgarth as there's not a great deal to do apart from the falls, and Cauldron falls isn't easy to find. I know some of us can spend all day on one fall of course, but it mightn't be everyone's cup of tea!

Ribblehead is easy to find, and there's plenty of parking although it does fill up early with walkers. There's the viaduct, caves, water features and limestone pavement within easy reach. And the Three Peaks. And a good pub that's open all day. The only downside is it's half an hour or so from Hardraw.

Hardraw itself is as good a place as any as nobody should get lost! The pub grounds have the waterfall and plenty of woodlands and rocks and things, and there's the church and river nearby. If the weather carries on as it has the last few days the waterfall will be worth seeing ...

I'd suggest either of those. What sort of photography do the majority want to do? We could split into groups according to taste.

I'm away from this afternoon (Wed) till Monday night so won't be able to offer any further hints till then.

Regards
Richard

Based on Richard's advice, I suggest we spend Saturday morning in and around Hardraw itself. It's a small enough place that anyone arriving should just need to wander about a bit and look out for people carrying tripods! It also gives us a crack at the waterfall, the churchyard, a bridge and stream, a bit of woodland, beer pumps (Andrea!)... ...and various opportunities for candids of odd-looking individuals carrying tripods for those of you of a sadistic nature! (Ian and Mandy, are you coming?!)

I may head over to Ribblehead for a dawn shoot at the viaduct (anyone else is welcome to join me!). Then again, depending on weather and the aftereffects of real ale, I may not! Even if I do go, I'll be back for breakfast!

Once we're all assembled we can pick another location for the afternoon, drawing on Richard's inestimable local knowledge (and I think I owe you a pint for all the help, by the way!), and so on.

How does this suit? Anyone want to do anything else?

Summary

We are meeting at The Green Dragon in Hardraw near Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales on the weekend of 22/23 April (the weekend after Easter!). Most of us are gathering on the evening of Friday 21 April for food, ale and a chat.

The Saturday is generally spent wandering around the locale doing a bit of shooting at whatever takes our fancy. In the Dales subjects should not be too hard to find, especially if your preferred material includes hills, fields, dry-stone walls, farmhouses, barns, waterfalls, sheep and gormless-looking photographers!

The Saturday evening is generally used as an excuse for more food, more ale and more chat, whilst the Sunday usually involves a bit more shooting until people make their farewells and head for home.

I believe the Green Dragon is now fully booked (worth a try, though!) but there should be plenty more accommodation 5 mins drive down the road in Hawes. See www.wensleydale.org for more details.

Hope to see you there!

I'll go first.

I'll see you on the Friday evening! I've had 10 rolls of SFX in the fridge for months ready for this!

Better bring a big red flashgun then; because if the weather is like last year!!! :surprised:

Only joking, Frank has organised this, so good weather is assured.

Hi folks

I am a newish member of APUG who has recently returned to monochrome photography after a gap of over 20 years. I've been looking at the galleries and following some of the forums for a few months now without getting too involved, and only picked up this thread last night. As a near neighbour of Richard's who lives in Wensleydale (a little place called Thornton Rust, about 5 miles from Hardraw) I was wondering if I might come along on the Friday evening to meet some of you? Its a great shame but I can't make it on the Saturday as I am out walking with friends in the Lakes and while I am available on Sunday I suspect that most of you will be setting out earlyish (hangovers permitting!) for journeys back home, so Friday is probably the only chance I'll get to meet up.

Just how good is this cheesecake? - maybe someone would consider swapping a piece (a largish one!) for a roll of SFX or a Gold-plated Leica M7, or something similar......?

Graham - Welcome to the Gathering! The more the merrier!

Dave - I sorted out the locale and the meeting place, I thought you were organising the weather?!

One and all - The multitude of cheesecake references in this and other threads are a personal matter between Mr Miller and myself. He maintains that I owe him a variable (and ever-increasing) number of slices of the said dessert for having the temerity to describe him in accurate terms on this forum - to whit "a grumpy old git, especially when he doesn't get his cheesecake on time!".

Any other cheesecake fetishists attending will have to bring or buy their own!

:D

Actually Dave, given that the reason for my description was the hard time you were giving Andrea about her non-posting of very good images in the APUG Galleries, I think I'll donate all your slices to her!

(All Gathering attendees should also note that police in the Northeast of England are currently searching for a shadowy character known as "Dave the Easel Nudger"... Take whatever precautions you feel are necessary!)

Frank, you know very well what we ended up with when I organised the weather; remember Castlerigg? If your memory has failed, there resides a reminder in my personal gallery, that is unless it has blown away.(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

As for the rest of your slanderous / libellous / truthful post I leave it to others to judge it’s veracity.

Have it on good authority from me that it was his belly nudging the Easel. Dave was nowhere in sight
