Welcome Brian... If you sift back through this thread, you will see that we are meeting on the weekend of 22/23 April (most will probably be there on the Friday p.m.) at the Green Dragon Inn, Hardraw (Dead Link Removed). You had better book a room - or there will probably be other accommodation nearby but don't leave it too late: it's a popular area for hill walkers and other strange creatures...

Cheers, Bob.

Well, I reckon I've just booked the last room - the tent and thermals can go back in the loft! Means I can carry some camera gear with me as well (I'll be arriving by public transport, so luggage is a bit limited). Look forward to meeting you all!

Excellent - Full House!

Welcome Rob! Look forward to meeting you there.

(In case the lack of rooms puts anyone off, I'm told that there are plenty of places to stay 5 mins down the road in Hawes (just be careful how you phrase your asking for directions...! :D ))

Dear all,

I will arrive some time on Saturday morning (we try to be fairly early) - is there any chance to meet up with you, maybe for lunch or so?

Did you make any plans for Saturday at all?

See you all soon!!

Plans at these events are generally made by Frank on the Friday evening between cheesecake and malt. We will find someway of conveying them to new comers.

Oi!

Now look, I want to strongly disagree with the above statement ('cept for the cheesecake and malt bit)! Just 'cos I've got the loudest mouth at the table doesn't make this a one-man committee! Besides we usually all get lost within an hour or so of setting off on the Saturday anyway!

It actually might be an idea to list a few likely spots that people are interested in shooting. The Dragon has a spout-type waterfall at the bottom of the garden for those who can't bear to be more than a short walk from a beer pump, but my favourite in the area is Scaleber Force near Settle (a bit of a scramble but a lovely location).

Any more suggestions?

In summary - We are meeting at Dead Link Removed in Hardraw near Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales on the weekend of 22/23 April (a shade over three weeks off). Most of us are assembling on the evening of Friday 21 April for food, ale and a chat.

The Saturday is generally spent wandering around the locale doing a bit of shooting at whatever takes our fancy. In the Dales subjects should not be too hard to find, especially if your preferred material includes hills, fields, dry-stone walls, farmhouses, barns, waterfalls, sheep and gormless-looking photographers! :D

The Saturday evening is generally used as an excuse for more food, more ale and more chat, whilst the Sunday usually involves a bit more shooting until people make their farewells and head for home.

I believe the Green Dragon is now fully booked (worth a try, though!) but there should be plenty more accommodation 5 mins drive down the road in Hawes. See www.wensleydale.org for more details.

Hope to see you there!

I'm very sorry to say that my wife and I won't make it to this event, which is a shame because I've been really looking forward to it.

It's not all bad news however, the reason we can't come is because we expecting our first baby (!) and I've decided I need to save the time of work for when he or she comes along

Hope you guys have a great time, I will (finally) get chance to meet some of you at Ilford in June

Ben, that's a pathetic excuse! Where are your priorities, man?! You're only forgiven if you promise to make lots of photographs of the new arrival and post them in the galleries for us!

Seriously though, many congratulations mate and well worth dropping out of the weekend for. All the very best and we will (hopefully) see you in June!

Thank you! I promise to make lots of pictures to make up for it

I am genuinely disappointed not to be coming along, I was determined to finally make it to an APUG gathering. However the hotel and time off work is booked for the Ilford trip in June, so short of natural disasters (and probably even then...) I'll see you then

I'm thinking a nice close up of of the old beer pumps might be nice. Bring along The FDK Beast and some glass plates  Just a pity it takes so long to sort each image - I might need refreshment

Two things to add to the list Frank.
1. Please everyone, bring along some of your prints to show off to the rest of us. It’s nice to see what other are up to.
2. Weather permitting there is a railway viaduct not too far away that may provide a few pics. I’ve never been there so cannot say for sure.
Maybe Richard may like to pitch in, being a local, he will have a better idea than most.

I've no clue as to what is around the area so I'm happy to tag along with the majority. I've been thinking about which prints to bring already Dave - I'll definitely bring along a few holga shots especially for you

How many of us are going?

Congrats Ben! So that's you out of our little meetings for the next 16 years or so then... Hope it all goes brilliantly well for all of you!

On the subject of locations, I've never been to the Dales for some reason but Aysgarth Falls looks quite good - a flight of small waterfalls just down Wenslydale from our pub. Having said that, I'm happy to bag whatever pops up over the weekend...

Cheers, Bob.

Andrea - Have a word with the landlord - I think it was mentioned earlier in the thread that he's into photography himself.

Good point about the prints, Dave. I think my own selection will be a bit sparse (not been printing / shooting much of late - life stuff) but I'll try and bring a couple.

If you're thinking of the Ribblehead(sp?) viaduct, yes I quite fancy that too. ISTR checking it with a sun-position compass a last year and thinking that it would suit an early morning shoot in late spring / early summer, but I may be wrong. (ISTR a pub there too...!)

Leon - Please bring the very high-key print that was in B&WP UK. I thnk it was an alcove in a wall? I really want to see that one in the flesh! I need to have a chat with you about Holgas too...

Aysgarth is good with quite a few locations along the flight to choose from, but it is quite well-known and well-visited so earlier rather than later might be an idea. Some spots are easy access, some are more of a scramble. There's also a picnic area off to one side. Wellies are recommended for pretty much all of the waterfall locations.

Just down the road from there is West Burton / Cauldron Falls which is a really pretty one and with very easy access. (Okay, so I like waterfalls a lot - sue me! )

If we end up with a lot of suggestions then we can put them in a hat on the Friday night and do a lucky dip!

Any more bids?

Happy to Frank, but I'm sure i brought it to the lakes last year ... so maybe you've already seen it?

fine by me, but I think we may to dose Dave up on the cheesecake so he doesnt get too excited by the topic of conversation, holga lover that he is.

Ahem, you are quite correct (apologies mate, I'm actually typing this in a 2 minute break in a training session I'm giving! I'm a bit bammered!) - however I actually would like the opportunity to bask in its glow once more!

One of the nice things about the Green Dragon is that the pub's interior is made up of a number of smallish rooms, so we should be able to mingle or split into subgroups and remerge as we please.

Hopefully we should be able to have a natter re all things plastic without raising Dave's ire. He's not a pretty sight with his dander up!

A few suggestions for photo opportunities, roughly in order of distance from the pub

Mill Gill, Askrigg - a fine waterfall and deep limestone gorge
Askrigg itself - village made famous in the James Herriot TV series
Semerwater - a sizeable lake and an old ruined chapel
Aysgarth Falls - often busy though
Keld, Swaledale - several good waterfalls in the area, plus Crackpot Hall, a ruined farmhouse with the finest view in the Dales (allegedly!)
Snaizeholme - good for wildlife including red squirrels
Ribblehead - the viaduct, limestone pavements nearby, and a really nice little packhorse bridge crossing an interesting limestone gorge
Gunnerside Gill - lead mining remains
Langstrothdale and Cray Gill - river scenery and falls
And not forgetting Fountains Abbey, although it's a bit of a treck

Last but not least, Hardraw Force, England's highest unbroken waterfall, in the pub grounds

Regards
Richard

PS - check out my web site www.dalesphoto.co.uk for some more ideas (almost all in colour though!)
