apug.com was always the 'asia pacific utilities group', I own pretty
I don't care what the forum is called. I'll keep the 'analogue only' box checked most of the time, and get on with things as before. I suspect most people will wonder what all the fuss was about after they have been using the new system for a few weeks.
Sean: do whatever you have to do to keep this wonderful community alive and well.
I do work myself and I attend workshops, and still I visit here daily. Even though I have been at this for decades I can still pick things up and share any relevant knowledge. I suspect only a small subset of film photographers attend workshops at GEM or elsewhere due to time and expense. Those that are doing it themselves could benefit from the expertise here. They just need to find out about it. Having run a website myself, the most difficult part of it is attracting new members. Existing members need to spread the word. Relying on a Google search only goes so far.And this is all great, but look at the date of my membership and realize that then that is what I got. Finally, a friend directed me to this site.
In addition, I should add that there is very little interest in APUG here, or any other photo site for that matter. Most are doing work themselves. See the GEH (now GEM) website. They offer a host of workshps, one in emulsion making this week and another in two weeks.

My general feeling is the site will obviously move towards hybrid processes since this is opening the floodgates and there are quite a few people doing hybrid things. Nothing really wrong with that. I doubt the digital only section will get much action aside from the people who are already here. I could be wrong. Some of us do have quite a lot of knowledge about things that aren't talked about already here, and that will come out I would assume. I expect for the first while, there will be a lot of action....
I wonder too if some of the people who have left over the years will be back.
APUG doesn't have a bad reputation of grumpy old men. You are thinking about the other site beginning with L.
Yeah...i did not realize this was an "issue" or that it was even Tracked/Counted. But i do not own a website, or even ponder that kind of "stuff".I wonder how many people rarely log in because they stay logged-in all the time - as I do - that way I can immediately post a reply should I want to (though not often).
I'll miss my daily "fix" of APUG while you are down but look forward to more of the same on PHOTRIO - thank you, Sean.
If the default setting were to be set at "Analog Only" when the migration happens, I'll bet most people won't even notice that there are an extra couple of areas on offer, for them, APUG will be the same as it always has been - totally analog.
We get this on APUG a lot already believe it or not. Posts like that get reported as "scanning" or "digital" and our mods remove it. Quite often it's an innocent mistake by a new member, and usually when the member's post is deleted and they are told to "take it to DPUG you don't belong here", they leave and never come back. One benefit we'll have on the new system is if someone posts a digital topic in the analog areas by accident, we can simply move it to the appropriate area without the usual dramas. We'll definitely need to expand our moderator teams, especially in the analog areas so anyone trying to crosspost digital content there is informed that it's 'not on'. Anyone abusing the system by crossposting, trolling or anything else can be removed. The analog areas should be considered by all as 100% analog and enforced the same way APUG was. All the scanning, digineg, photoshop etc can be discussed in the hybrid/digital areas.not sure how that can be possible, unless the individual replies get filtered.
Example
Q. I've got a weird mark on my neg
A. Scan it and fix it in photoshop.
How's that going to be filtered out of the APUG view?
I can understand Sean wanting to make a living, but to think this move won't change the nature of this forum is naive. As always, time will tell!
In my testing, with only 'Analog' enabled it is practically identical to what we have right now. So worst case it should only be APUG with a different name. We'll see how it goes, I'm pretty happy with the software design.I hope it all works out.
And loose all the totally analog users... get realMy guess is much of the current APUG activity will move to the new hybrid section and there won't be that much going on in the analog section. If having three sections requires more $ in development and maintenance I wonder if it was a good idea financially, as opposed to just having a hybrid forum.
Yeah...i did not realize this was an "issue" or that it was even Tracked/Counted. But i do not own a website, or even ponder that kind of "stuff".
Anyway.....i also stay logged in, for days, or even weeks at a time. I only have to Log In again if i have run some kind of scan that deletes that status. It kind of makes me curious.....why log in every day, why not just stay logged in 24/7.?
Thanks for that explanation, we always logged off thinking that we would 'overload' the site if many others were doing that. But habits are habits, hahaha ah ha.. and will log off again after this post, but have clarity that we don't have to do it.Supposing APUG is pure HTML, .. ... APUG is not a pure HTTP/HTML site though, because while I am typing I am informed that there is a new "alert". There must be another communication channel open parallel to the pure "web" mechanism.
What I mean is, it seems to me many APUG participators are hybrid workers, and my guess is therefore that much of the action currently found on APUG will be in the hybrid section of Photrio.
It's definitely something I am considering for the new site. It would be open viewing for registered members, but not guests though. And we'll need to keep an eye on bandwidth usage.I for one am happy with the possibility of the hybrid and analog under the same roof. I no longer will have to use code for the d-word. My interest is in analogue output, but I am agnostic on the input.
On a side note, I was wondering what the wisdom of not allowing the plain, unpaid members (like myself, currently) to see the images that are uploaded by subscribers. If I was a paying member, I would like to have my images be seen by as many people as possible. Any plan to change that policy with the new site? I would love to see all the wonderful work that I see only a glimpse of everyday on the right side of the page.
Thanks, Sean. Looking forward to the new site. It's definitely something I am considering for the new site. It would be open viewing for registered members, but not guests though. And we'll need to keep an eye on bandwidth usage.
