Looking at its spectral sensitivity, its similar to Ilford SFX... with finer grain. Hmmmm... I might have to try some 4x5 if I can find some...

it is Agfa-Gevaert Aviphot 80.

I have done intensive side-by-side comparison tests of Aviphot Pan 80 and ADOX HR-50. Result: The films are different, and the differences are significant.
HR-50 has better shadow detail and a significantly better characteristic curve (more linear and less S-shaped). HR-50 also offers visibly better results in reversal processing (BW transparencies): It can manage a wider contrast range (better 'dynamic range'). The ADOX HR-50 / Scala 50 transparencies (slides) are really outstanding. This film has become my most used BW reversal film meanwhile.

Best regards,
Henning

Further up Adox, too, said that it is different. But their and your statement doesn't disagree that it could be Aviphot 80. What you say agrees with the film being pre flashed. Which changes the base film for the better.

I was reluctantly planning to try Rollei Retro 80 for IR. Now I can use HR50 with less trouble.

I'd find that information important. Any dev good for Aviphot would be good for HR50. Indeed Amaloco AM74 worked well on the one roll I tried. Both normal and IR.

I have used ADOX HR-50 for infrared with excellent results (and better compared to Retro 80S which I have used for years). I am using a Heliopan RG 715 filter, which blocks light under 715 nm wavelength.

I'd find that information important. Any dev good for Aviphot would be good for HR50. Indeed Amaloco AM74 worked well on the one roll I tried. Both normal and IR.

So far I've got the best results with
- ADOX HR-DEV
- ADOX FX-39 II
- Ilford DD-X.

Best regards,
Henning

You should use "ADOX IR-HR Pro" which is the HR-50 without speed boost (preflash).
Why? Retro 80 supposedly had problems with high contrast and blown highlights. If the Adox is the same Aviphot, but preflashed, it's a better film with friendlier characteristics.

And using a developer that can tame Retro 80 should be great on the already tamed Adox film.

I bought AM74 because it works with Retro 80 and also with the 3200 films. My main devs, D76 and Rodinal, are not good there.

So I'm happy with HR50, but knowing for sure which is the base material is helpful.

Edit: to be clear, I was planning to buy Retro 80 as a fine grain IR film. I already bought AM 74 as a suitable dev, which also works with delta 3200. Then along came HR50 and I didn't have to worry as much about contrast by buying this instead.
