Is it possible to use Acufine developer diluted 1+1 or 1+3? If so, what multiplication of the developing time for the stock solution should be used?
Is the same trick possible with Ethol UFG?

All help much appreciated,

Lachlan

You could, I suppose, if you wanted to use it 1-shot, but there is also Acu-1, which is a version of Acufine designed for 1-shot use. I reuse and replenish Acufine.

Aye, it certainly is possible to dilute Acufine 1+1. I shoot Tri-X and other 400 speed films and use Acufine 1+1. EI 1000 I soup for 10 min., EI 1600 for 14 min., and EI 3200 for 21. All at 21C.

UFG can be used diluted 1:5. Use continuous agitation and increase development time by 2.5 to 3X. Check http://www.bkaphoto.com for documentation on using Acufine and UFG.

I have used Acufine as one shot for many years with excellent results. Fine grain, ei boost, etc. I use diluted 1:1 or 1:3. As 1:1, you double Acufine's recommended times. As 1:3, it is four times Acufine's recommended times. Acufine is really a great, long lasting developer.

As a guide, increase the stock solution times by 50% when diluting 1+1 and by 100% when diluting 1+3 then fine tune development from there.

A couple of months ago I put a roll of 120 HP5+
through a 1/24 part of one liter of stock Acu-1. A
Bunch more dilute than the can's recommended dilution
for a 400 speed film; rather than 1:5, 1:11. More
than enough development; 500ml solution
volume, 12 minutes.

In the next few days I'll have another same film
for same processing save for dilution. I'll up that to
1:15. I'm quite sure a 1/32 will prove to be plenty.
So, 32 rolls/liter of stock. That's up from the can's
12 rolls at 1:5 using 500ml of working strength.

Forty plus rolls are the claimed capacity. At their
recommended slower film dilution of 1:10 and solution
volume of 250ml, 44 rolls can be developed.

My liter of stock went straight into 4, 1/4 liter
glass Boston Rounds equipped with the Polyseal-
Polycone caps. Further splits bring me to the needed
1/32. I've no partially full bottles. Dan

The old Acufine brochure used to include instructions for 1+1. IIRC it was 2x the standard time. I used it 1+1 and got some very pleasing negatives with Tri-X (around 1970).

Incidentally, they included instructions to agitate very gently in order to minimise grain and contrast when pushing. I believe that it's good advice.
