Unfortunately, we've already dragged the thread topic pretty far away from Super 8, where against all odds it sounds like Kodak may actually be doing something more than just discontinuing additional products. And that's actually a very interesting topic all by itself these days.

I believe that is one of the places that Super 8 does fit into a film school program. I have heard more than once of this assignment:

1) here is a super8 camera and one roll of film.
2) here is a story outline.
3) you have this group of 2-or 3 or 4 students.
4) you have the weekend, to plan and shoot the story.
5) you will hand in the cartridge, and the next time you see it will be in class along with everyone’s results SO you have to get the exposure right, have to edit in camera, have to plan your story out.
6) the results will be critiqued in Class for XYZ% of your mark for everyone in your group....

Talk about teaching folks to think on their feet, and work together.

I just see this particular camera, at this price and with this particular type of processing at this price, to be of minimal use to, well, almost anyone except film schools. But if it's a big enough hit - if it lead to E6 Super 8 coming back, that would be awesome. And then as long as they are coating E6 again.. :smile:

It does mean they are behind film, but cinema film is the one remaining area where some pretty big money - some producers - are still behind film as well.
 
Of course, it is only with respect to cinema film that Eastman Kodak has any remaining involvement with marketing...

I like that type of assignment. It would be interesting and even fun to see how the different groups do.
 
where does one get super8 mm film processed these days ?
when i was shooting 16+8mm i was able to drop it off at walmart or sam's club
and fuji would send it to dwaynes and it only cost around $5 to process (& splice if it was 8mm)
one of them was sent to switzerland. one could ( and probably still can ) buy film and a processing mailer
from prep film services in michigan. he sold all sorts of film, and if you didn't want to have him process it for you
you could just buy the film without processing. its been a long time, not even sure if that guy is still doing it.
is john schwind ( international film brokers ) still the best place to get film ?

does dwaynes still process cine film?
locally we have cine lab in new bedford mass, they do mass quantities, im not sure about short runs.
 
No industry cine lab I know lists processing of S-8 film. Typically small enterprises from the S-8 world take care of processing.
 
Agx is right Super 8 is mostly processed by small companies that often also offer respooled films under their Label like Kahl or Andec in Germany for instance or in the US you have Dwayne's of Kodachrome Fame that processes Super8 Color film. For DI and telecines Cinelicious is the best adress not the cheapest on though they do and did work for major Hollywood Movies hence the price. In the U.S. there are few labs that process super 8. Maybe 6 that I know of. I have mine done at Pro8mm in Burbank, CA. I just sent a few cartridges over last week and they actually called me today to make sure that what I ordered is what I actually wanted. Great customer service.

I wonder if that's good for film, or bad for the rest of the company?

But historically film has been a hugely profitable venture, so if they've been able to get their production scaled down to meet the new lower demand, I suppose it could be again.

I bought an iPhone from a mobile operator. It was designed by Apple, but it was made by Hon Hai (a.k.a. Foxconn)... Confusing, eh?
