That's Stucco Mike, it sounds a bit like Gesso and is applied somewhat like Gesso but tastes different, kinda like Chicken. Then there is Fresco:

Don't forget Al as in Al Fresco, eating paint outdoors.

The more Gene Kloss work I see the more I like, before anyone says it's a simpleton statement I direct you to this web site, what I like is the dreamlike feeling that I get when I view each one of the etchings.

Should we be discussing this homework out of school?

Thanks for the link.

I can see dream like.

Been focused on photography so long it's refreshing to focus on other media.

One of the things I have noticed with all these other artists/media (at least the ones I prefer) is a lack of distractions.

I think that is part of why Kandinsky, Tintoretto, & Michelangelo aren't my faves. Too many ideas on one canvas. Norman Rockwell's stuff is busy too but for me the idea "centers" better.

Should we be discussing this homework out of school?

It's "home"work. :D

This news item came up today on CNN, the snake scroller, when I read it I came upon a term that I looked up and one thing lead to another.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/europe/07/16/france.mona.lisa.face/

Which lead to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sfumato

Sfumato lead to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiaroscuro

Which Tintoretto used among others.

Strong chiaroscuro became a popular effect during the sixteenth century, in Mannerism and in Baroque art. Divine light continued to illuminate, often rather inadequately, the compositions of Tintoretto, Veronese and their many followers.

That's great Curt.

One of the photographic styles that I've been leaning toward for a while is using ample exposure to get great detail and limit the main subjects contrast, to heck with worrying about the highlights and shadow placement in the rest of the scene.

I actually learned this in shooting people pictures, the norm is for faces to carry the scene, if you don't get the face right it doesn't matter what else you do.

A perfect example of this is shooting people under hats, gotta find ways to get the eyes.

How is everyone, or is it everybody, doing with their homework? All of that education and I have elapsed into poor grammar skills. I've been spending eight hours a day on mine, the homework, and I still don't feel like I'm making headway. I have a fifty volume of the History of Art sitting in front of me to read by the weekend. Then there are gallery visits and letters to Artists, not to mention practicing the elements of techniques I've only read about. Time to order a new set of paints, got to go. Thank God for the spell checker. Sorry for the religious reference it's ingrained in the culture.

That is going to cost you big time. Send:
250 sheets of 4x5 Velvia
250 sheets of 4x5 Ilford HP5+
250 sheets of 4x5 Kodak T-Max 400
1 4x5 field camera with 75mm, 135mm and 350mm lens
and we will take care of your problem. And its "Churches" not "Chruches".

Steve

When do I get the film?

Steve

Not happening, at least not from me, I'm doing my homework.

On a similar note;

My daughter joined a college fraternity, Pi Beta Phi, and they are really serious about their "homework" for the "house".

This year she has to show up seven days early to get ready for recruiting and the like, $100 a day penalty for showing up late. :surprised:

Curt, you mentioned additional homework involving brushes and art supplies and I am wondering what you are referring to? I got the first assignment to study artists but nothing since. Also, are you going to let me use your Pocket Spot light meter during the workshop?

I heard (well maybe I was dreaming about hearing) a semi-reliable  rumor that Per was deleting one church from the syllabus and adding a day of shooting body painting in front of the cliffs at Ghost Ranch.

Mark I have enjoyed this thread more than any in awhile. I have looked at most all of these and Ralph Gibson has given me the most to think about...so far.
Thanks for starting this.

Glad you are here Barry.

It's nice to get out of the ruts now and again.

Are you coming to Espanola?
