To sign up for the 2015 negative exchange, please post here with:

Your Name
General Geographic Location
Preferred film format (35mm, 6x4.5, 6x6, 6x7, 6x9, 4x5, 5x7, 8x10, any)
Preferred medium (silver gelatin, Pt/Pd, Cyanotype, etc).

Groups will be matched based on film format first and foremost. Geographic diversity will be considered so that nobody gets stuck with having to mail all their negatives and prints to far-flung foreign lands at outrageous shipping rates. Printing medium will be a lesser factor - if there are enough folks who want to do contact-printed alt process prints, we can do a special edition for them.

For Example:

Scott Davis (TheFlyingCamera)
Washington DC, USA
35mm, 6x6, 4x5
Silver Gelatin

Other rules:

for now, this is limited to b/w printing only, because not everyone is set up to print color, and in some ways color is less open to interpretation.

when you make your prints, please make notes on an insert to send along with the print exactly what you did to make the print you ship. Include details such as cropping, burning/dodging, toning, what paper and what developer, and any manipulations you may have performed to the print and/or the negative.

limit paper size to 8x10. Anything else you want to do is fair game - you want to make a 1:1 reproduction of a 35mm negative for the print? go ahead! crop to a square from a rectangle? great! crop to a rectangle from a square? fun! Print full frame with a filed-out carrier? run with it!

What timeframe are we looking at?

PS. I'm out of the country and off the grid until February 9.

To clarify what I meant by timeframe is when do we have to have the negatives to the recipients? When do we have to have the prints returned?

The general idea is that once the lists are compiled and announced, have the negatives in the mail to everyone on your list within 30 days. That will give everyone time to shoot, process, and make their own personal print. Within 30 days of receiving your negatives, make your prints and put them in the mail. That ought to be more than enough time to make four prints and make a trip to the post office. If you are having a problem with completing your assignment, please speak up early, and provide a time frame in which you believe you can reasonably complete the project. If folks enjoy the exercise enough that they want to do it again, and someone has not delivered work, they will be excluded from future rounds until which time they complete their obligations.

Ok folks - last call to sign up for this first round. We need ONE MORE PERSON to make five full sets of four. If you're on the fence about it, now would be the perfect time to join in. I'll give it until tonight (US East Coast time - after the Super Bowl? ) and then finalize the list.

Please forgive me but I'm struggling to work out how this actually works. Say there are 5 people in a group, do we sent out a negative to each person at the same time or does a batch of negatives get sent from member to member? If we receive a negative from someone, do we simply make a print and post it back to the person with the negative?

If I am in a group with 5 people will I receive 4 individual negatives from which I will make a print and send it back to the original sender along with the negative?
