While you don't HAVE to print your own, it would be very instructive to have your own interpretation of the image at hand to compare against what the others have done.

As to the quantity, we're only talking about making four prints, three if you don't print your own.

Oh, I was making four prints each negative.

Oh, I was making four prints each negative.

So Bill, are you giving the extras away ?

I think though that most are likely to make at least two each of the others' negatives, so we can keep one for ourselves.

I found that making prints from four negatives (including my own) meant at least two, and maybe as many as four, fairly long printing sessions. So I put the project off a bit longer than I should have.

If I had a dedicated darkroom, and it was easier for me to break the project into smaller bites, it probably would have been done quicker.

I used to print other people's negatives all the time. I enjoy doing it - this Exchange has been fun! - but I'm out of practice.

Only one of my group came through with a negative so far so it's hypothetical...

I was thinking like print exchange (at LFF), everyone on the group gets a print of every negative in the group from every participant... The multiplying effect turns it into 12 prints (I was going to not send my interpretation of my own negative) which is about the same work as making 11 prints for a print exchange of 10 people (plus organizer)

Plus the negative I did get in the exchange is screaming for another interpretation - so I'm doing another set.

Bill,

I guess I misunderstood the rules then. I thought we were supposed to make one print and to mail it back to the author of the negative. Oh well, next time I'll read more carefully...

Thank you Mike for your nice comment. Enjoy the print!

I think I'm the one who was wrong though.

I've attempted printing the two negatives I've received thus far, without making a print I'm proud of.

Since this whole organized print/neg exchange started, I have not been motivated to do much photography at all, which makes it that much harder for me. Making the prints is one thing, but the negative has been the killer for me. The kind of photographs I like to make these days are very much in the moment, like portraits or urban landscapes, where the subject matter changes constantly. While I like to make pictures of vast landscapes too, I generally employ the Hasselblad for that type of activity. So I'm a bit stuck, I'm afraid.

It sounds easy to just load the camera and go out and shoot a few frames on a tripod. But I just cannot bring myself to sending out negatives that I wouldn't want to print myself... So far I've exposed three rolls of film for this exchange, and none of the negs made it past the trash bin.

Thomas,

If you are struggling so much (and I can commiserate, since I know I did), why not send three different negatives out this time around? I'm sure you could pick three perfect ones. Your correspondents can't see what the other ones are receiving , and at least it will get you out of a rut this time around. Once the pressure is off, you'll see that you will easily be able to fire off three identical ones for the next round :whistling:

Recieved Anikin's print of my neg - I really like the choice of paper and toner you went with for this image - something I probably wouldn't have thought of myself. I love it, thanks!

Thanks for the encouragement.

It's still baked into my conscience to do right by my group, and I will get there somehow.

Well, the idea WAS to also scan and post the images you printed here, so we could all get the benefit of seeing the different interpretations.

Oh. I guess there is another thing I got wrong in this round . I did not scan my prints before mailing them. And
there is really no way I could have scanned Paul's print. He'll know when he gets it. I'll pay more attention next
time. Promise!

Rachelle,

I'm glad you like it! But really, most of the credit goes to you. It is such a beautiful image, and perfect
composition! Oh, and perfect time of the year as well!

It arrived this morning, and it makes me wonder how you managed to produce that print from a substantially larger negative.

Now for a confession - For personal reasons, I have not been in the darkroom since April. Once I've had a break away from everything, I hope to at least try to get back in to the swing of doing stuff.

That was very tricky. It required all the bellows extensions I could get from by 4x5 enlarger. And since the
exposure time was very short, I used a black card as a shutter instead of my timer. I hope you like it!
