I see Adorama is doing the same. They both have TMY-2 and Tri-X400 at around $86.00. Maybe somebody from KA is reading these forums and figured out that they were dead if they didn't at least align themselves with Ilfords prices. I think you'll see the other two (tmy2 and tri-x) come down also. To all those folks who didn't like the pissing and moaning we all did about Kodaks bulk roll prices??? We got our point across and the old "squeaky wheel" got the oil. John W

nice

I suppose in theory it is nice to see someone is running the world from their little keyboard. About that pissing and moaning -- why are you p&m about this? I thunked it was a free country. Too many people, it seems to me, love to badmouth the few vendors who provide great stuff to us old duffers. I would suggest that is counterproductive and not terribly smart.

Well, Roger Cole reported the same roll at B&H at $85 only a few days ago and now it's $59.95. I wonder what brought about this price reduction? Does B&H regularly drop prices by $25 which is nearly 30%?

The drop may have nothing to do with APUG of course but great news. Actually the old price of $85 is great news to us in the U.K. if we were able to buy it at this price

The price difference is now U.S. $60 and U.K. $189. That's just a little over three times the price

At that U.K. price the next bulk roll of TMY I buy will be when hell freezes over

Pentaxuser,
I couldn't agree more. It might be a fluke, but I wonder if there would be any change in price without out this "pissing & moaning" on this forum. I now look at Tmax 100 with a different view. Like maybe I will buy some! Before? No way! I think they got the hint. John w

Better than sitting around with my finger up my nose! You can think whatever you want about it being counterproductive, but like I said, "the squeaky wheel gets the oil"! It doesn't have a damn thing to do with badmouthing anybody, but it does have something to do with logic and common sense. At least keep the price of your bulk film close to Ilford or forget about even selling any bulk film. John W

Um yeah to think any major corporation makes any decisions based on "the forums" is naive at best.... They don't give a crap about what we say here... There's always a financial reason why things are done (like an overstock of short dated film)

Yeah that's just wishful thinking... Coming from a corporate American background I can tell you if you mentioned something about "the forums" at a meeting you would be laughed off..

HOWEVER I will eat my words if price for all the bulk film goes down... But I seriously think it won't

Great news. Thanks for the heads up.

This is my favorite film and I always buy two or three rolls whenever they go on sale. $59.95 is a good one too.

If there is any left next week I'll probably pick up 3 more. :D

Everyone else is free to whinge and whine as they wish.

Thanks!

Thanks OP for the tip! I just bought 100' roll of Ilford Delta 400 instead of TMY a month or so back because of the high Kodak prices. I want to say the price was close to a $100 if not more.. and the Delta 400 was around $61... Great to see the price come down on the TMAX 100... Just picked up a couple rolls before they jack the price back up... Now if they'd get the price of the TMY down in the same range, I'd buy a couple rolls of that as well...

Man I'd buy a roll too if I didn't have 300 ft of acros in my freezer... Anybody have any opinions on how they compare? Worth picking up 100ft even with the acros??

Maybe Ilford isn't a major corporation then:D It is true there is always a financial reason why things are done and in Ilford's case I'd contend it values the size of its U.S customer base and is very sensitive to the reception given it by APUG U.S.

While there may be many film customers who know nothing of this forum, I'd have thought that beyond a certain size any forum represents a useful sounding board.

Any company that doesn't give a crap about what customers as a whole say about its product will surely end up in the proverbial crap

One brand of film is not a "distress purchase" in the way, say, water is, so the sky is not the limit price-wise. Indeed I'd contend that film as a whole is not a distress purchase in that sense except to a tiny minority who would not be able to sustain a film company even if that minority paid "the earth" for film.

I wonder how many U.S APUGers would buy TMax bulk film if suddenly it approached the U.K price of about $190 let alone the price in Japan?

Two totally separate leagues... Kodak is a publicly traded company... That means they answer to investors more than consumers... Harman isn't so it listens more to the end user... Thats what makes me like harman more

Right now Kodak is doing little to please either tho

Online forum posters are the tip of an iceberg. Kodak may not care what is said here, but they sure do feel the sales they aren't making to all the other people don't post online but are just as pissed off.

Interesting statement but not certain there is any information available that transforms it from anecdotal speculation to actual fact??

I know that I am a very, very small part of the pie but I have personally not found any pressing reason to abandon TMX100 and Portra 400. Of course, if you believe that boycotting Kodak film will cause them to drop their prices then more power to you. Usually that type of thing works the other way.

Man I'd buy a roll too if I didn't have 300 ft of acros in my freezer...

Me too--I stocked up when fuji discontinued the long rolls and the yen was still at 140. In fact, I've got so much 35mm in my freezer, I really don't need more at any price.

But if we think whining on the forum has any real-world effect, let's try an expirement--let's see if we can get them to lower the price of of 4x5 sheets--Kodak is quite a bit more than Ilford there too.

+1 to 4x5

Of course everyone would like to think that our tiny-plankton yelling in a huge-ocean might actually influence something. And maybe it does, but there will never be any way to prove it.
There are other possibilities that would make Occam a bit happier though.

It's a fairly standard thing for ebay sellers to jack the price up of something that they don't have in stock: rather than end the listing and re-list when in stock, they just make it a few grand more so noone will buy it.
I really can't see stores like B+H needing to do this though, as they have a very good 'backordered' system in place.
But hey, if they've only got a few boxes left and it's going to be a month before the next delivery, why not double the price and maybe at least one customer is desperate enough to buy it in the interim?

Or they (retailers and/or Kodak / Alaris themselves) may just be testing the market? How do you know where Demand/Supply equilibrium is if you just fix price at one point all the time?
Jack it up a bit, see how many you sell. Drop it a bit, see how many you sell. From that, you can see where your maximum-profit point would be.
If this is what they're doing, the best thing is to send them a message that they understand (ie, cash). Don't buy when they jack it up. Buy more when it's low. That'll provide the impetus for them to keep it low (we can hope).

Whether or not posts here influence the decisions at Eastman Kodak or Kodak Alaris, I cannot say.

But I do know that for many things photographic and film centric, if you do a Google search, very often an APUG post shows up near the top of the list.

And I'd be willing to bet EK and KA do the odd Google search.

By the way, Kodak Alaris is also a privately held entity - somewhat like Harman.

I wasn't clear. I'm not saying boycott anything, just that if there are people complaining about the price on an internet message board, there have to be a bunch of other people who are also not buying it because it is too expensive for them. I love tmax and am reaching the end of a 100ft roll. With Kentmere at $40 and tmax at $80 before this price cut, I was seriously considering learning to love something else. You mention Portra - wonderful stuff, but with 1200 ft of expired cine film waiting in the fridge at $.01 per shot it's not a difficult choice.

Agreed on lowering the price of 4x5! and start putting it in 50sheet boxes again, dammit! ;-)

After reading this thread I went to the B&H website and discovered that they were selling 100' rolls of FP4+ for $50.95. Do you suppose Kodak and Ilford are having a price war?

I have pretty much got my process for FP4+ down to where I get results comparable to Plus-X (Rodinal 1+50 for 13:00) but the new price for TMax-100 made me consider trying again to see what I could do with it. When I saw that FP4+ was $10 less, however, I decided to hold off on that project for now.
