    How to achieve high detail/tonality?

That's a pretty big allegation, paulie, against a person who has done much for this community, and who is very widely respected. You also seem to be implying that it isn't possible to get such results without PS... and that is false. Anyway... one always has to bear in mid that the best...

    How to achieve high detail/tonality?

Why not buy Ralph's book, which is coming out in the fall ;) If I had to guess, I'd say these scenes were printed with some contrast masking, but why not ask Ralph. But in brief... b&w film can handle a *spectacular* amount of range, it blows digital right out of the water in terms of single...

Here is another internet M8 Depth of Field Myth busted

The M8 was an American fighter plane from the WWI era. It cost $5000 (inflation adjusted) and required the pilot to wear special goggles to filter out infrared.

*Very* interesting, thanks for posting it! To me, these tones evoke fire and smoke.

Now that you mention it, An, I was just thinking that mild solarization can make some things look kinda metallic. Anyway can you please post an example of your drag bleaching?

    Chromoskedasic printing-anyone tried it?

Interesting. First I'd heard of this, it looks interesting. Dan, let me suggest doing a systematic test in which you expose your paper in test strip fashion, and then snip it up in the perpendicular direction, so that you can develop those to varying levels of completion. Thus you'd have an...

    Future of 35 mm SLR

First of all, I don't think that any serious photographer should belittle any gear. There is no correlation between the pedigree of the gear and the actual worth of the resulting photographs. Frankly I don't know any camera that I would deem mediocre. I seem to get along well with all of...

    How to achieve metallic tone.

Thanks. Let there be peace in this thread ;) There is no magic combination, we should all be able to agree on that. Another thing we should all agree on is that what people mean by 'metallic' varies greatly. We had a thread just like this about 6 months ago and suggestions were all over the...

    How to achieve metallic tone.

 Okay Michael R, let me get this straight. Most of the time when people say they want "look X" on apug, 10-20 people throw all manner of film/dev combos at them before we ever really know what the hell the O.P. wants. Hence I provided my own example, asked if my example was what was...

    How to achieve metallic tone.

Okay, quick summary: ilford hp5+ or fp4+, i.e. traditional grain film... not a tmax or delta film. Developer ID-11 (D76) 1+1, all of that is simple and standard. The "trick": push at least one stop, and don't overdo the exposure. If I remember correctly, the moonflower shot was with a one...

    Bern, Switzerland?

Bern is gorgeous just about everywhere. But I most fondly recall the area right around the bear's den near the Nydeck bridge. It doesn't get much more "Bern" than that. I don't whether if it's still open, but anyway it was the surroundings around there that impressed me most. The oldest part...

Alright here's an alternative link. You can't see the other one unless you're an apug subscriber (which is well worth it, by the way)... http://keithwilliamsphoto.net/closertohome/index.html Navigate to image 11, the 5x7 open moonflower. Several have told me that it give a metallic...

    Future of 35 mm SLR

You asked for a prophecy so here is mine ;) (1) Within ~10 years, no more SLRs will be produced.... neither film nor digital. The mirror mechanism will be completely bypassed, in favour of ultrahigh resolution electronic viewfinders (EVFs). The first step towards this - "live view" - is...

    35mm SLR - why?

Well I would say start a thread and there will be lots of suggestions. Of course, there is no magic formula for composition. Even if there were, everyone would immediately exhaust it and it'd need to be replaced by something else. Nevertheless, there are some fundamental ideas and...

    35mm SLR - why?

I'll just add that ceding some decisions to a modern, highly automated body can be cathartic. I generally enjoy working more deliberatively and manually, and 'fast' for me is an rb67. But sometimes I get stuck in a rut, the gear feels like its taken over the creative process, and scenes seem...

Many thanks, Tony, Perry and Michel. I really appreciate your comments. Tony I see what you mean about the crop. What I show here already has some top/bottom crop, but indeed, the central section framed by the bolts is where the money is. Perry, I suppose that I do need to think more...

    35mm SLR - why?

Unfortunately, that isn't my experience. There is a scary level of faith that the computer and the web can answer anything. If Apollo 13 had happened to this generation.... Sure there are exceptions, but on the whole, virtual education has taken away many necessary hands-on experiences...
