Zeiss Jena Sonnar 180mm F2.8 weight question.

I bought some telescope making parts, and did a lot of metal cutting, and made a very solid mount for the 180mm F2.8 Sonnar.

The problem, for me, is that the post that screws into the lens casing would unscrew at the worst moments. I still have the parts around.

A late 300 f/4 is amazing.

I tried both a late 180mm f/2.8 MC and a 300mm f/4 MC. Both arrived DOA. In one case the aperture was stuck wide open, and in the other it was stuck fully closed. After losing $70 or so in return shipping costs, I gave up on them, but now I wonder if my Pentax 645->P6 adapter was somehow defective.

I just took delivery of a Pentacon mount Zeiss Jena 180 2.8 lens, the more modern ML version. It's in great shape, but it's pretty heavy. Now I'm waiting to take delivery on an Arax 60 camera that I've ordered. I can't wait to use it, and for the vast majority of shooting I will be using a tripod with the camera but should I support the lens using something like a monopod? I'd like to hear from people who have used this lens and what they used for support, if any.

Yes, it is. However, in my case the combo was rather wobbly. Even with the use of a heavy-duty Linhof studio tripod, the combo was wobbly. I am not an expert on this, but it seemed to me that the lens collor by itself is not up for its task.

When I started looking for info on these lenses in various forums and the like, the first thing that popped up was the sticky aperture. Carl Zeiss Jena produced a lot of lenses with a lubricant that tends to get sticky when it dries up. A well executed CLA will cure it for once and for all.

Good to know, but I moved on. I ended up with a 300mm f/4 from the Pentax 67 system along with an 80-160mm f/4.5 zoom.

I'll look around my studio and see if I can find those parts. This was a very clever adaption, and SOLID as a rock on a tripod. A fellow in Ireland and I kicked around this idea at the time. Then I sold the lens after I built the lens mount.

The tripod post on the lens is finely threaded, and easily unscrews. Very aggravating and just not a good design.
