My favorite general purpose B&W film is Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100.
For rich blacks & good visible grain I've started to like Neopan Presto 400.
For even more contrast I like Ilford Delta 100.
Kodak BW400CN is also quite nice.
TMAX 400 is also very nice, but developing is expensive here in Japan ($10 for a 120 roll  )

Do you mean that shops in Japan charge different amounts to develop different types of conventional B&W film. If so, I find this a bit odd, since the chemicals and procedures are identical for different film types, varying only in times. OTOH, perhaps this means that they're actually using different chemicals for the different brands and types of film, which could be a positive sign.

In any event, most regular posters to this group seem to think that it's better to develop your own B&W film than to have somebody else do it for you, if this is at all possible. You get far more control over it that way, and any screwups are your own, rather than the result of some underpaid lab technician getting sloppy.
