Not quite enough improvement over 135. On the other hand... 6x7cm. YUP!! I have personal experience with this. I owned a Bronica EQR-S and, although it was a very fine camera system, I ALWAYS chose 135 for portability or 6x7 for quality. The next logical step up from 6x7cm is 4x5.

On the other... other hand... if you get a fantastic deal you can always play with it for awhile then decide whether or not you want to keep it.

But, again, I agree with M.A.Longmore... 6x4.5 is luke-warm.

ETA: Just looked at the ad. Pretty damned hard to go wrong for $200!!!!!!!

I would be remiss if did not enable your GAS, however wouldn't you be happier with a Hasselblad which can be used for 6x6 and 645.

I've never appreciated the 645 Concept, and the imaginary limitations
I've imposed on that format. Maybe, someday if the price is right ...

I own the 1000s and think for a 645, it is hard to go wrong at $200.

I am a little suspicious of his concern re warranty that made him cancel this on ebay....my alarm would go off....why wd the seller think someone wd want to return this? Does it all work?

Get a 3-7 day inspection period, run a roll, dev it, call it a day, this is a good deal....good luck JDog on CL, I did well getting my 1000s there too!

Don't know why 645 gets little love here.
i actually like it. Still immensely portable but the IQ advantage of 135 is sure evident to me even in 8x10s.
The tones are just smoother.

agree Bruce, I shoot 35 and 645 a ton, and it is a treat to print a 645 neg! It is 2.5 times bigger, heck that has gotta account for something. Yeah 6x6 is even bigger but....heak $200?! I'd be in my car....

Question: Don't some of these Mamiyas use funky batteries that are hard to come by?

There's a Mamiya for sale in the consignment case at my local camera store but I have not taken a closer look at it because I hear that the battery might be hard to replace.

Spending money on a camera that could end up being mothballed for lack of a battery isn't a very palatable proposition to me.

Is this true or have I been getting a line?

The light meter prism takes 2 regular 1.5v batteries too...

I have a friend who shots with a Nikon SLR and a Mamiya 645. He uses the both in the same way - shooting the MF camera just like a 35mm but with significantly higher quality results. I have a Bronica SQA. It isn't that much larger but is at least for me... its slight size increase makes handling different. Or maybe its the exposure count. Either way, I think the Mamiya 645 system is one of the best deals out there right now. Dirt cheap for what you can get.

The lens is a lot newer than the camera - and therefor preferable.

It would be a great way to try out 645. If you like it, the lens and inserts (and possibly the grip) will work fine with a newer body.

You will probably want a shorter lens as well though to get enough of a true experience from the experiment.

Which is what they should have made. An SQ with film backs for 6x4.5 or 6x6 would have been good but they made the ETRS before the SQ.
