I've had a look round and didn't have much luck. I did find a green filter but it's not marked and rather suspect and not all that dark.

I did come across this Brownie Model C with a OC cup and a #3 cup. After a few minutes I could almost see my fingers a couple inches away from the light.

Hopefully someone else will check there stash of filters and you'll find what you need.

5x7 size and up ..hit me up please
THANKS PETER

I assume you mean a Wratten 3 / Ilford 907 which is the dark reen safe light filter. A 7 or 7b is brighter and more specific to certain products, the 7b was for an infra red film.

They do turn up occasionally, I went through a pile of Kodak beehive filters at the last camera fair I visited. I'm not at home at the moment but I don't think I have a spare.

If you are looking to see in the dark buy some IR googles. I have some Toy Jakks Pacific Spy net night vision IR goggles. I use them every time I handle film. Takes all the doubt out. Hasn't fogged a frame yet. Obviously I wouldn't try it with IR film.

Peter, I have some articles on making safelight filters, it was common at one point for people to make their own. I'll check and see if there's any mention of dark green.

If you want added security then use a dimmer switch as well.

To make your own filters it's an 8% Gelatin solution with the dyes added for Dark Green it's 8gm/litre Napthol Green and 32ml Filter Blue solution per litre, but these aren't sold as such these days. You coat two pieces of glass with the dyed gelatin, you can add a tissue or paper layer and then mount together gelatin sides facing. Wratten sandwich the two together wet. I might have a go at making some filters in a month or so, I'd use pigment inks as they are light fast.

Sandwiching Roscoe material will work it would be useful to have a genuine Wratten 13 or Ilford 907 as a comparison. What are you using it for ? development by inspection ?

Sigma Aldrich has napthol green
Natural pigments had a ultramarine blue which has the highest concentration of green

I was going to send a pm but felt this info should be open source and educational for anyone else wishing to do this
THANKS Ian!!

Hi Peter, the mixing is quite simple. It's just an 8% Gelatin solution which is 80g Gelatin per litre then add the dyes, in this case the 8g Napthol Green and the 32ml Filter Blue solution. &ml of the Gelatin solution covers approx 10sq cm. Most of the suggested dyes came from a company called Hőchst (pre WWII), and had names like Darkroom Green, Dark-room Red etxc, although some are simple like Tartrazine.

Ilford coat their filters on their small test coating machine, glass filters would have been on their plate coating line, you could use an air-brush. I have a set of Pigment inks which I already use to colour French polish, so would mix the appropriate colours from them.

There are a few on UK Ebay at the moment, try an ebay search "vintage Ilford Darkroom Safelight 5x7 inch Filter dark green 907".

(I picked up a set of Orwo filters including dark green from Ebay a while back, they arrived in very good condition, from Bulgaria or similar, IIRC. You should be OK if buying from a reputable seller in the UK)
