Currently using a 27" iMac from 2012. It works well but sometimes gets sluggish with larger files now that I'm shooting a 50MP camera.
I thought I'd get a Mac Mini with the new M1 chip and install the full 16GB RAM.
Before I do, I'm looking at monitors for photo editing, and I'm intrigued by the widescreen offerings (32", 34" and 38"). I know these are more gamer-type monitors, but has anyone switched to that kind of screen?
If so, is photo editing any easier/harder with the different aspect ratio?
Second: can anyone recommend a good-quality screen for use with the Mini and specifically for photo editing/color accuracy?
I'm getting dizzy considering all the specs that I need to deal with: IPS, resolution, 4K or not 4K, USB-C, etc etc. The choices and price ranges are daunting, to say the least.
I like Dell monitors, use them a lot. I also like the iMac screen a lot, even the 2012 screen is pretty damn good. Not sure about LG, ViewSonic and other brands in the long run.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for replying, I actually forgot I posted this.
I had to act because I put my iMac up for sale, so after a lot of shopping around, I decided to get a Dell 34" 4K monitor.
Only problem, it was out of stock everywhere.
So I bought two 27" Dell S2721Q monitors and a really good 2-monitor stand.
The S2721Q is a 4K monitor with impressive specs, I'm sure it will be amazing to use.
Total cost for the two monitors and the Dell MDS19 dual monitor stand was around $800 USD shipped, thanks to holiday discounts.
The 34" was selling for about $400 more and was an UltraSharp type, not a 4K.
I think I'd have preferred a simpler 1-monitor solution, but I'm happy with two very good monitors.

FYI quite a few 4K tvs make decent monitors and can be had for way less than computer monitors. My wife got a large one to replace dual monitors for her home work station for under $400. Most newer pcs and macs have an hdmi output and software just for that.

Thanks! I looked into TVs as well, there was a nice Samsung on sale. Ultimately, the TVs had too many other options that I would never need.
The Dell monitors were $300 each.
Further, some of the TVs had questionable calibration possibilities and narrower color gamuts.

Adobe RGB colourspace on this monitor is not specified. Depending on your needs, and colourspace you work in, the monitor might be not optimal. For example if you work in adobe RGB and your monitor only can display 70% of the colourspace, this might an an issue between what you see on the monitor and what you get when you print an image.

Just spoke with Dell Tech Support, they told me the monitor supports 95% RGB when used in RGB mode.
If it's not what they claim and the monitors are unusable, I have 30 days to refund/exchange.
Thanks for pointing that out, I'd overlooked that in all the speccing I did.

It just really depends in what colourspace you work with. I have seen people print out all their images in CMYK and be happy with it. Others only work in Adobe RGB others even go as far as working only in ProPhotoRGB. The fact that you own a Colormunki is a big step into getting accurate colors in your prints. But again I don't know what you do with your images. For example if you upload an image to a platform It will be converted into SRGB no matter what colorspace you saved the image as SRGB is just 99% web standard.

Edit: The graph below shows you the different colourspaces and which space subsets the other.

Honestly, the most accurate monitors I've used were CRT monitors like the Sonys. There's another manufacturer that sells better ones, mostly to hospitals for imaging, and those things are amazing. The newer LCD medical monitors are supposed to be as good, but I'd like to see it first before believing that. The aspect ratio of the monitor can affect your photos in the same way, or at least the last one I owned did.

Thanks, guys. I no longer do very critical work, but I like to have a smooth, seamless experience when going from screen to print.
Less hassle is key.
I shoot MF digital and LF film, and scan the film on another computer/monitor setup.
My needs these days are simply accurate (i.e., good enough) prints from my PS or LR files.
Getting the monitor calibrated, then synced to the printer, is what's need most.

I called Dell again to talk to another person, ask the same question and see if I get a different answer.
Yes, I know, it's a slow day.
Anyway, second tech tells me RGB is 90% supported on this monitor.
So I'm not worried or think I made a mistake buying the S2721Q, it probably will need some tweaking to get these monitors in line, is all.
