why no film canisters?

When I started in photography (in the 1970s), Ilford film didn't come in canisters. It came in foil packages just like 120 film comes.

It was a few years later that Ilford adopted the canisters.

I can't believe it - a 2 year old thread and nobody mentioned it..!

Well, when I revived the thread I did say that I was going to ask the same question but did a search first. I figured it was better to add to the old thread rather than start a new one. But I was surprised no one mentioned it either.

Anyway, thanks your explanation makes sense! I like it when things make sense. So little does now days.
