As an extension to another thread...a wise gentleman suggested this thread...Good idea Bill.

So here goes: If you could, who would you most like to have a discussion on photography with?

Leonardo daVinci. I'd like to know why he didn't get around to inventing film photography. He was brilliant but perhaps just a few years too early. He might have a much better answer than I can imagine.

I'm lucky to have a few people close to me who get it...

Got to talk with my sister's boyfriend Saturday. He told stories of National Geographic photographers who (these days) take 7-day trips (because they want photographs which include people... who are around on weekends)... Then they come back with thousands of pictures.

Carleton Watkins regarding his experience photographing Yosemite with an 18x22 inch wet-plate camera in the 1860's.

Of the people who post here, several come to mind.

Ron Mowrey and John Sexton are two.

And Sean - because he gets so little chance to talk about photography.

blansky...

It would be a mano-a-mano Battle to the Death. Neither receiving nor giving quarter. A cage fight. Death before dishonor. Or before compromise of any sort. Gloves are for sissies. So is morphine. Just rub some dirt in it, get back up, and fight, sucker.

if we're talking about people who are still alive to talk to, rather than raising the dead ... then john nanian would be at the top if the list at the moment

i've already gotten to meet and talk with one of my photographic heroes, John Dugdale. I'd love another chat with him. For folks I haven't met yet, I'd love to talk to Bruce Weber. After seeing an HBO documentary episode about him mentoring a bunch of teenagers, I think he would be fascinating to hang out with for an afternoon and talk photo. It didn't hurt any that he shoots a Rolleiflex :D

Who do I want to chat with? Someone who prints their own work, and who's works regularly fetch six digits and more at Sothebys and Christies. That should narrow the field some.

I've never really stopped to learn about famous photographers' work.

I don't have many idols aside from the legends of Skateboarding photography, like Jordan Grant Brittain.

But the people I like to talk about photography the most are: (1) my father, who shot professionally for decades before I inherited his Hasselblad system; and (2) my wife's uncle, who still shoots professionally (although he uses that kind of camera that doesn't use film) and owns a range of cameras from Nikon 135 SLRs to 4x5" monorail and knows a lot about them!

Both of these guys used to develop and print. My father learned to print color by himself (tossing huge lots of color paper in the trash in the process), because there wasn't any school to teach color printing in Brazil and he didn't have the money to go to Germany to learn how to do it at Agfa.

Both breathed too much color paper fixer (and bleach) vapor for a long time, but are still alive and kicking.

Cheers,
Flavio
