no never...and I haven’t exactly led a sheltered life. Great photo for the shock and disgust factor but not sure what the actual fuck it has to do with the topic. Seems like this thread has gone way off into the weeds.

That was communism at its best, but don't make mistake about it, there was no love involved. Neither anything like it happened between Kremlin occupant and any other member of sucked-in countries.

Today same picture would have drawn completely different sentiments.

Uh, we here in the west didn’t really have much insight into the persons and machinations that went on behind the iron curtain. So, it may be totally relevant, if a bit obscure, but it is not at all obviously to me.

No problem. Honeckers name came up and for those who lived the times it is rather impossible to forget that affair. I actually wondered for a long time what kind of reaction, if any, there was in GDR around that time, but I can say it brought out laughter at least in general population of Poland.

An iconic photo. You haven't seen it before?

I must admit I too only saw that photo years after the demise of the GDR. And I was not actually behind a rock concerning anything related to the GDR.
But I back then saw videos of such meetings.

Often I found it interesting at such situations as this one, how different still such media perception can be.

I think I first saw the photo in 1999 in a Lonely Planet's Berlin guide which I was reading to get as much info as possible on your capital as I was about to visit it in the autumn. The city marked 10th anniversary of the wall falling during my visit.

Male lip kissing was common up until a few generations ago in Russia. The first time I saw that was as a kid, watching the Soviet Red Army playing Team Canada, on TV,1972. It was pretty shocking for this 9 year old kid at the time, seeing them embrace and plant passionate kisses on each others lips, after a goal! We won, by the way!

I have seen that photo many times since 1979 when it was taken, and many similar kisses in news clips on television.



To get back on track, if you used ORWO products between 1971-1989 then they were produced during Honecker's tenure as leader of the DDR.

Embarrassing? Why is that? Because of a photo that is widely known to generations now? I could show some stuff from where you live that I would argue as far more "embarrassing". But it would still be a matter of one's point of view.

It appears I have done a favor to some members as learning history is never too late nor ... embarrassing. It was not intended, it just came out this way.

I read Colin's remark "embarrassing" because the conversations here tend to go all over the place and often sideways. One of many reasons why young photographers stay away.

In my experience lurking here for years, the main reason young photographers stay away is because of the immense level of gatekeeping by certain members of this community. If the first thing people are told when they show up is that they are doing it all wrong and behaving ignorantly, they will leave and not come back. To be clear I don’t say this associate you with that behavior, rather to point it out.

In my experience, wandering conversation threads are pretty much the norm on photography forums of all types.

I don’t think the photo is the source of the embarrassment but rather it is that we here in North America have little or no education in Cold War era history of that half of Europe.

This is true of all history. As the old saying "history is written by the victors".
News and so in a way history is presented differently on different continents and in different countries. Two people can often see the same event but have different perspectives on it, depending on where they are located.

I have seen that Brezhnev and Honecker photo many times and understood its meaning, but then I live in Europe (on the periphery, out in the sticks) and back in the cold war era we got news of any major happening in the Soviet and Eastern block countries.

We also got some Orwo B&W and colour transparency film and I remembering printing on Yugoslavian photo paper because they were very cheap.

All I can say those were interesting times, but not every country had it going the same.

East Germany had to be treated different by Soviets due to proximity and ties to West Germany, Hungary always had Austrian pedigree built in and never needing much to blow it all (so they had it pretty good actually), Poland is a story of its own in most ways. People who lived through it and wound up having successful lives afterwards look at those days probably somewhat differently (I know I do, as it is easier to keep things in perspective after travelling the world, spending some time in Italy, then a good part of my life in the USA, now continuing to see the rest of the world), but for anyone who never had any direct knowledge of what those times were like, it would take a long chat by a fire place and more than a case of single malt to explain it all.

On another hand, when I posted the photo I had no intentions of making any other point, but to show a man who was mentioned for other reasons.

Finally read through this page and I want to thank all those who gave info, especially @Team ADOX ....lots of fascinating info about the current ADOX facilities, and the abilities of other companies to perform various tasks involved in manufacturing film.

If anyone is disgusted by that photo, I am flabbergasted... And yes, it's hardly new - the photo or the concept of men having a kiss.

I do want to comment about the "extreme gatekeeping" that sometimes happens here. When I first landed at APUG, I found myself hounded by a couple of members who practised extreme gatekeeping and I did nearly leave. Indeed I did eschew APUG for almost a year. It does no good in terms of spreading the word or helping people get into film photography.

I'm pretty certain that the 'new' APX films are Kentmere or close variant thereof - .

Yes, there is a consensus by those who have tested the current APX films correctly (sensitometric tests = characteristic curve, resolution, sharpness and grain tests). And who have also tested them the same way in comparison to these films which could be similar or identical.
I have done these tests, other photographers I have talked to as well. And you will also find such test results here on photrio.
The current AgfaPhoto APX films are from the Kentmere production, therefore identical to Kentmere 100 and 400. Rollei RPX 100 and 400 are also rebranded Kentmere 100 / 400 films.

The above 2 quotes would appear to summarise the "Who makes AgfaPhoto APX 400? question and I gave no more thought to it until yesterday when I saw Greg Davis' video on the APX 400 film. I then recalled that earlier, in fact some 18 months earlier, he had done a video on Kentmere 400 so looked at that again. Just to set the scene for those who haven't seen his film comparison videos, he compares spectral sensitivity and H&D chart of each film with Tri-X as the comparison so there is no direct comparison between RPX 400 and Kentmere 400nm

It certainly looked as if the spectral sensitivity using his chart was the same but his 2 charts on the H&D charts were noticeably different to my eye. He then compares grain and as far as I could make out, the differences between APX 400 and Kentmere were very marginal

So in summary my conclusion was that the only noticeable differences were between the two H&D charts

So my question is: Could the inherent latitude in measurement accuracy and readings from measurements that are involved result in such differences which leads towards the two films being exactly or as near as makes no difference, the same or would the two films result in negatives that are different enough to make either film exhibit different characteristic in the shadow, mid-tones and highlight rendering that makes it worthwhile for the user to use price differences as the sole determinant of choice to the extent. In other words it would be a fair response to say that for all intents and purposes the user may as well base choice on price when next asked the question of which film should I buy?
