Which gives better scan quality, an epson flatbed or the plustek dedicated film scanners? I'm thinking both 135 film strips and 120 film strips.

And if its the plustek, how much better, marginal or significantly better?

Sounds like Plustek 120 vs an Epson V7xx/V8xx. An advanced forum search will find a lot of posts.

The current price of a Plustek multiformat scanner in UK is really stupid money. They are asking around £1700 or close to $2500. The Nikon 9000 multiformat scanners are still around priced somewhere in the region of £1200 or $1750 are still a good buy. I know the original software will not work with 64bit systems, but the aftermarket Silverfast will.

The quality of the Nikon models is without reproach. I used to own a Nikon LS50 35mm scanner and with the software and the facility of the ICE cubed dust and scratch eliminator was superb. They performed far better than any flatbed scanner then or now. The glass between the scanner lens and the negative may have something to do with that and cannot be eliminated.

The Nikon needs a glass carrier to provide a sharp scan edge-to-edge, so maybe that's a wash. In the US, prices for a used Nikon 9000 range from about $1500 to over $3000. It does focus, and that's not a feature I would willingly give up.

That scanner is probably more trouble than you need, but I think there was a version of oXYgen for Windows XP.

There was a light version of the software with limited functionality and it only runs on windows 2000 or XP.

Why do you say that scanner is trouble? I was thinking that being able to scan 36 mounted slides in one go would be a very handy feature.

It's a fine scanner, but obsolete hardware and software are always a challenge to configure and maintain. If you have the patience and time to fiddle with this stuff, go for it. Creos are also big and HEAVY
You might want to check out the Yahoo ScanHi-End group -- someone there probably has hands-on experience they can share.
