I experimented with Kentmere and tired Dektol, Clayton P20, and Zonalpro, and thought that Kentmere worked well with all three, if Dektol is your standard developer you may need to fine tune your dilution and time.

I switched from Polyfiber to Polymax Fine Art when the latter was introduced. I still have 700 sheets of PMFA in the refrigerator, and use it frequently. I also use the Kentmere fiber VC as well as IMGIV 1K. I have used nothing but Dektol for the last 30 years (OK, there was this fling with Amidol, but it didn't last).

Kentmere VC fiber is closer to PMFA than the Ilford. Whatever you use to tone, you will never get the same results that you got with the Polyfiber.

Since we can't go backward, we must go forward. Dunk Kentmere VC fiber in Dektol and be very ginger with the KRST. Play with it 'til you like it and move on.

I've used Dektol with Kentmere's RC variable contrast papers and it works just fine. Expect neutral tones that pick up some warmth in selenium afterwards.

I printed Kentmere fineprint in Dektol but I found the prints very cold, too cold. So I read the other suggestions with interest. Gr., Maarten

just getting back after a long layoff. which paper would be comparable to kodak polyfiber f-surface, double weight?
grateful,
d.

Varycon Fotokemika Fiber. Beautiful-wonderful paper for straight prints. For tones, I'm experimenting with Fomatone from Foma.

My experience tells me you will not get similar results using Ilford's substitutes for Rodinal and Agfa Multi-contrast papers..

Ilford NO SUBSTITUTE FOR AGFA MCP & RODINAL!!

My experience tells me you will not get similar results using Ilford's substitutes for Rodinal and Agfa Multi-contrast papers..

No way in Hell. Ilford just doesn't have "it". They have nothing to compare with Rodinal, and their paper is for sh*t.

Varycon Fotokemika paper or
Foma paper is the closest. Each has an Agfa equivalent, as suggested by Photoimpex and Freestyle.

If Ilford were my only choice, I'd have to give up photography altogether (after carefully using up my supply).

I like Varycon (sold by Fotoimpex as Vario Classic), both in glossy and (very) matte. But it is hard to get it warmer: does anoyone know of a formula? I've tried Moersch's Meritol, but still it is too cold...

hang on Rollieo

can you elaborate?

these are somewhat "strong" statements

i just went to your homepage, and i must say, your images are not particularly inspiring

so, if Ilford products are less than perfect, who are you to judge

Not sure what "home page" you went to, I don't have one here. Try:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rolleijoe/ and you'll find it. I've been at this for almost 40 years. So my comments come from decades of experience.

My statements mean what they say. Ilford has too soft a look, need something stronger. Foma & Efke deliver. Even Rollei Ortho25 film is amazing.

Efke film (in Rodinal), on Fomatone (in LPD or Moersch WA) is a winning combination. I refuse to use anything Ilford, and would not recommend them but to my worst enemy.
